N.Scott Momaday

On February 27 in 1934 Navarre Scott Momaday was born, in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was born in the Kiowa and Comanche Indian Hospital, and was then registered with having seven-eighths Indian blood. N. Scott Momaday was born of, Natachee Scott Momaday, having a mix of English, Irish, French, and Cherokee blood while, his father, Alfred Morris Momaday was a full blood Kiowa. He stated, “my father was my mentor, he was a painter and he taught art. He once said to me, 'I never knew an Indian child who could not draw. ' (Mills).” His Father taught him the true meaning of Indian drawing, and after that Momaday started to draw at age six. He also described about his mother that, “her intense love of books and writing really helped me get through school, and i appreciate that (“N.Scott”).”After high school, Momaday attended college and was awarded his Bachelor of arts degree in English in 1958, from the University of New Mexico. He later received his Ph.D. in English Literature from Stanford University in 1963.

Momaday’s writing is filled with stories about himself and his people, the Kiowa. He creates settings based on places he’s been in his life and he states Kiowa legends, followed by tribal history, then personal memoir, and finally links these stories with personal memories and stories passed down by his paternal ancestors.
