On a brisk, fall day on Sunday October 25th, 1998 a new baby was born at 7:34 p.m. at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. That 20 inch, 7 pound, 9 ounce baby was Nicholas Jack Nagel. There are two reasons for the name my parents gave me. My father Travis is a big golf fan and his favorite golfer of all time is Jack Nicklaus; he is considered one of the greatest golfers of all time, with 18 majors, the most ever by a professional golfer. My mother Marylou, on the other hand, loves Christmas and liked the name Nicholas due to St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children and sailors. The name Nicholas is a Greek name that means “victorious people.” Shockingly, it took only a few hours of labor for my arrival. My mom was as calm as can be and didn’t realize that she was going into labor. While my mom was in labor, the rest of my family watched the Denver Broncos defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars. My parents joke with me that I’ve been a Broncos fan since I was even born, which is true. All of my grandparents, three aunts, and three family friends were at the hospital to greet me. After I was delivered at approximately 7:34 p.m. my family passed around some “It’s a boy” cigars. There were a lot of visitors that brought gifts and outfits. My parents and I got to go home the night after I was born. Grandma and Grandpa Nagel stayed for two days.
