Introduction Dark Souls is an awesome franchise and From Software is an amazing developer. I had a great time putting this together and reading all your comments. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or just engage in the comments. I really like the Dark Souls community and I enjoy contributing. Summary and Results Earlier this week I posted threads in multiple subreddits linking to a google forms survey. I received over 4,000 responses, people ranging from 13 to 52 years old. We are mostly male. The median age is 22 and the average age is 23. The average total hours played is 591. The favorite game is Dark Souls 3, with Dark Souls 1 coming in second, followed by Bloodborne, then Dark Souls 2 then finally Demon’s Souls. The first Dark Souls is the majority of people’s introduction to these games. PCs are the preferred system to play on while Xbox is by far the least favorite. Your gender had little impact on which was your favorite game. However, women are 5% less likely than men to prefer Xbox, holding all other variables I tested for constant. This might explain why more women prefer Bloodborne and Demon’s Souls than men, as PlayStation players were much more likely to prefer those two games. Older players preferred Darks Souls 1 and Demon’s Souls while younger players preferred Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. Additionally, younger players liked PCs while older players preferred a PlayStation. Your preferred gaming system impacted your preference for games. Xbox
The film Embrace of the Serpent directed by Ciro Geurra is a dualistic, winding and poetic story, which follows the life and journey of an Amazonian shaman as he interacts with western visitors. The story takes place at two different points in history, the first story occurs around 1909 when Dutch explorer Theodor von Martins suddenly falls ill in the heart of the Amazonian forest. Through some research von Martins discovers the key to his survival lies in the Amazonian Yakruna plant, which is known to have immense healing powers. The only person who knows how to find this plant is Karamakate, the only surviving member of his tribe. Karamakate’s tribe has been killed off by white rubber barons, so he is initially weary to help von Martins.
Throughout Miller’s essay, he follows a similar format in the way he states his opinion about the connection between reading and writing to his readers. With every subheading, he tells a story of the influence of reading and writing on the protagonist of each story. Every subheading begins with the introduction of the protagonists through the final outcome of their actions. For example, the first story of the two boys, Harris and Klebold begins with the revelation of what they have done—murdering fifteen people with weapons they created on their own. This knowledge to create such weapons and to follow through with such an act is all blamed upon technology
Child of the Dark covers the time period between 1955 and 1960. It gives insight into the way that many Latin Americans lived during these times. The story takes place in Brazil and focuses on the life of Carolina De Jesus and her journey through countless obstacles of life. Like Carolina, many Latin Americans lived in rural areas known as Favela’s. Through Carolina’s experience and everyday life the reader learns the struggles of living in a society governed by the colonial legacy of a stratified society.
This paper attempts to offer a Marxist reading of Conrad 's Heart of Darkness (1899) and Defoe's The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719) . Specifically , this paper highlights how the concept of commodification helps us to understand the dialectic struggle between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat which are both considered the products of their socioeconomic and material circumstance with an emergent capitalist culture. By depicting how capitalists in the two novellas commodify objects or humans and by investigating the struggles between the 'haves' and the 'haves-not' .
In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad suggest that true human existence cannot prevail productively without the dynamics of society. Throughout numerous scenes in the novel, Conrad stresses the necessity of societal restraints through Kurtz’s inability to prosper as a human being when he is removed from the expectations of civilization. In the scene above, Marlow’s myopic observations of Kurtz reveals Conrad’s theme by illustrating the annihilation of Kurtz’s essential human characteristics as he descends into a barbaric lifestyle absent of the norms of society. Not only does the above scene support Conrad’s main theme, but it portrays his writing style, characterization of Marlow, and symbolism as used throughout the novel.
In Heart Of Darkness, Conrad introduces the following characters, the manager, the brickman, and the foreman, with various distinctive characteristics. Additionally, Conrad applies each man to contribute towards accumulating information about Mr. Kurtz to Marlow. Correspondingly, while Marlow was accumulating information regarding Mr. Kurtz, Marlow encounters a painting created by Mr. Kurtz, which possesses a symbolic connotation to it. Furthermore, as a consequence of Marlow interest in Kurtz, it exceedingly represents Marlow’s characteristic.
Analyze the significance of political upheaval in triggering questions of culture, community, nation, and, crucially, subverting gender hierarchies in Dark Heart of the Night.
So, I’m going to change things a bit. Instead of just talking about dates and numbers, which can be boring; I’m going to give this a little casual twist. So, in order to start the history let’s get a few facts out of the way. Let’s talk about gamers, mainly because I’ll be using the term a lot; gamers are people who spent a lot of time playing videogames. The Average gamer playing video games has spent twelve years playing them. Adult gamers have an average of fourteen years of playing videogames, guys have an average of sixteen years, and girls have an average twelve years. Speaking of girls did you know that 47% of gamers are girls? I would have never guessed that, but it’s a fact. So, as of 2013 49% of all people who live in The United States owns a console. All of them that own a console have at least two of them. Me, I own eleven… I think I may have a problem. Anyway, now that some of the facts are out of the way let’s start, THE HISTORY OF VIDEOGAMES! Now before I start I want to talk about all the most important events in the history of videogames, as I call them eras. Each era is very important because they shaped the videogames we know and love today.

Speaking of games, video games have had a major impact on my life and on the way I see the world. I was initially hesitant to include this topic on account of its complexity, but I decided that it was simply too important to leave out. Gaming has impacted my life in many different ways, both positive and
When Marlow first hears about Kurtz he sort of pushes it to the side. He wasn’t very interested in who Kurtz was. He didn’t want to have the same opinion about Kurtz as everyone else. He wanted to form his own. Once Marlow learns more about Kurtz, and how he gave up the rich life of Europe to stay in the jungles of Africa, he begins to admire Kurtz. As the story progresses Marlow begins to become obsessed with Kurtz and getting to meet him. For example, when the crew was on the boat and Marlow heard that Kurtz had died he became devastated that he would not get the chance to meet Kurtz. “I couldn’t have felt more lonely of desolation somehow, had I been robbed of a belief or had missed my destiny in life.” (Conrad, 67-68) “Talking with … I flung one shoe overboard, and became aware that that was exactly what I had been looking forward to – a talk with Kurtz… The man presented himself as a voice” (Conrad, 67). Marlow’s obsession with Kurtz was an obsession with his voice. I think Marlow is obsessed with Kurtz because he believes that Kurtz is different than the other men. He believes that he has some sort of restraint and can control his destiny.
After reading Richard Miller text Dark Knight of the soul” the author tries to link some mass killing it's due to not taking the written word serious enough to pick up on potential attacks before they happen even though it sounds like a good idea to try and use literature to identify troublesome students. I'll have to disagree with that of idea but he believes that if individuals spend more time taking literature serious a lot of these school killing would have been stopped beforehand, I know how much power reading and writing can have on a person mentally but I don't believe that literature will stop a individual from going on a killing spree because in the text the author brings up multiple factors that can cause an individual to resort to violence. But as the narrator
In the 1950’s, Duplessis and is government called “Union National’’ were in power in Quebec province. That period called the Great Darkness is characterised by the fact that instead of taking a step forward like most countries, Quebec took a big leap back. A lot of people fought back and tried to take him out in order to stop the conservatism and to follow the path that the rest of the world was already following. Some of those rebellious were the authors of The Total Refusal, an important book in which figured poems, paintings, sketches and plenty other art forms. It is a renowned document that we cannot forget. The book is a part of our story and it teaches us a valuable lesson. The Total Refusal (or Refus global in French) changed the
"Men! The only animal in the world to fear" (Lawrence). Mankind is subject to change in respects to their environment, but throughout history, people have acted in such inhuman ways that it is irresponsible to blame their choices on their situation. D. H. Lawrence's statement requires a man to look inward and see the animal-like darkness in themselves. In, The Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad reveals the capability that man possesses to lose all form of reason, restraint, and humanity. Every character in this novel experienced a drastic change of heart when placed in the Congo jungle. In his novel, Conrad uses the literary elements of setting, symbolism, and character development to illustrate the theme that when humans are surrounded
Video games in today’s society have become very popular. Every new game that comes out to be played and conquered by the average gamer has its own category. There are several other types of genres of games that people play but because of big hit titles and the new popular game systems like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, people become more interested in a game that is well known than a game they have never even heard of before. Every game has its own storyline and own way of how it unfolds and where the game ends according to game play. Some of the biggest reasons people sway to certain genres of games is because of the game titles released under them and the demand of people who want a good game under that category. The top three most
