Research 1. Miles "Pudge" Halter is the new kid at Culver Creek Preparatory School in Birmingham, Alabama. His parents believe he switched because of his lack of friends, but Miles is seeking for the "Great Perhaps". Miles meets his roommate, Chip "the Colonel" on the first day and gets the nickname "Pudge" because of the irony of how skinny he is. He is introduced to the Colonel 's friends; Takumi Hikohito, Lara Buterskaya, and the breathtaking Alaska Young. Pudge grows closer to his new friends as they go through experiences such as pranks, school, basketball games, smoking and drinking. Pudge learns the most important part of these friendships is trust. He grows closest to the Colonel, and develops a mad crush on Alaska. Alaska is wild and unpredictable, but also intelligent and affectionate; this makes her alluring to the curious Pudge. He falls for the way she opens up to him, defends him, and shows him a life worth living. One night, the five of them come together to pull off a prank to get back at some snobby rich kids. Pudge and Takumi distract the dean while Lara puts blue hair die in the rich kids shampoo, and Alaska and the Colonel send out fake progress reports to the rich kids parents saying they are failing. The prank is a success and they celebrate by drinking. Alaska and Pudge end up kissing and it is the best day of his life. The following morning is the worst day of Pudge 's life.
