Guanyu Chen TA: Lindsay Broken but attractive I spent a lot of time wandering in Art History Museum trying to decide on an artwork to expand on a paper but the wandering seemed effortless because every one of them could light up my curiosity. In the end I chose a sculpture of a man with a broken nose because though it didn’t impress me as much as other artworks did with its beauty, it was unique in the way that it is not perfect. This broken nose belongs to St. Christopher, who is considered the patron saint of travel for once carrying the young Jesus across a river. Based on my observation, it is hard to tell whether the broken is caused by human or accident, but I can safely conclude that St. Christopher is damaged in many different ways. The left front part of the broken nose seems to be chopped off by a hard object( could be a knife or stone). The broken part could also result from the whole sculpture falling on its face and the nose heavily bumping into a hard ground. But I would doubt that because due to the dimension of this sculpture, the beard would also touch the ground if the nose were to but the beard has shown little sign of serious damage. Besides the broken nose, another obvious broken part of St. Christopher is the hand of his right arm. The hand is completely chopped off from the wrist so all we can see at the end of the arm is a column of clothes that covers the arm. We can say someone did this intentionally because it is precisely the hand that
In art, there are qualities that speak louder than words. It expresses many different messages and emotions and each person has an experience different from the next. In this paper, I will be discussing two artworks I encountered. The piece is a good example of how people can encounter different experiences in one piece. I attended the Orlando Museum of Art a while back with family and overall enjoyed my experience. On my visit, I found the museum quite impressive and felt a deep connection with specific pieces.
One pleasant afternoon, my classmates and I decided to visit the Houston Museum of Fine Arts to begin on our museum assignment in world literature class. According to Houston Museum of Fine Art’s staff, MFAH considers as one of the largest museums in the nation and it contains many variety forms of art with more than several thousand years of unique history. Also, I have never been in a museum in a very long time especially as big as MFAH, and my experience about the museum was unique and pleasant. Although I have observed many great types and forms of art in the museum, there were few that interested me the most.
Art History is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts. The history of art, we feel, can sometimes be confused with art criticism. However, Art History is concerned with finding the value of the artistic piece in respect with others in the same category of art or movement, and art criticism is more of an evaluation of art. The art examined best represents the culture during the time period, visions the artist imagined, and history behind an event. It also represents society in a specific area, beliefs the people may have, writing that tells a story, the natural world and environment, conflict between people and areas, and the human body. With these representations, artwork overall represents the life in which we live (d). Each piece has its own genre, design, format and style to it. This makes each piece extremely different, yet pleasing to the eye. They also vary between paintings, sculptures and architecture. These different types also make a variety of artwork to be seen by all people. The art pieces that I chose, Jar, Bottle and Glass by Juan Gris, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí, and Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, seemed interesting to me and I believe to best represent the context in which they were created, along with the major artistic movements of the time. I went on to research them more thoroughly to better understand the history behind them,
Christopher statuettes. As St. Christopher is known as the patron saint of travels, these statuettes in culture are typically placed on car dashboards and carried with one. As a representation of faith, in the belief of divine power to protect oneself with safe travel. In the film the statuettes most powerfully connect with run-away now gangster/hijacker Peter Waters. Each time after hijacking a car, he places his statuette on the dashboard, for Peter his statuette and this act represents his good will and nature as a person with strong faith, even though he commits felony. Here, the audience sees that the role of gangster doesn’t fit his personality. Later in the film, during the ending events, Tom Hansen picks up the hitchhiking Peter. Onwards, while in the car Peter on reflex looks to the dashboard and surprisingly notices Hansen’s St. Christopher statuette there, from which he begins chuckling at. – “Something else funny? Oh yeah. So, what’s that? Just people, man”. As for Peter seeing the statuette was a humorous reminder of himself and the faith that people share. For the audience, this moment has deep meaning showing the connection of faith between the two characters. Unfortunately, however Hansen is the only one to not understand the situation and from misunderstanding combined with racial stereotyping, he ends up shooting Peter to death. The impact of Peters death has a huge effect on the audience, a good-willed man of faith and
For centuries, people’s aesthetic value has been influenced by Rome's perfectionism, so do I. I used to think that artworks that make people feel appreciated are just equivalent to visual appreciation and satisfaction. However, after observing the painting and researching sources of this pieces of art I realized that an excellent artwork needs to cover all aspect requirements. For instance, an excellent artwork needs to contain a high operation of art skills as well as art knowledge in order to persuade audience. In addition, to qualify as a great artwork it has to create a substantial amount of activity in the audience’s mind or heart. When I look at an artwork I always try to figure out what is the artwork's message or what the artist is trying to communicate, to convey. Overall, I think a good artwork needs include some of the elements and principles of the language of art as well as the structure they give to be able to successfully communicate an idea.

Sts. Lucy, Catherine of Alexandria, Anthony Abbot, and Christopher with the Christ Child shows a characterization of the saints that can be deemed lively and personable. Each saint is depicted according to their own personalities. This can be especially seen through the individualization of Saint Catherine, who stands on a wheel, which is the symbol of her martyrdom, or through Saint Christopher 's walking stance, as he is the patron saint of travelers.6
I went to the Art Walk event in Newberg and stopped by the Art Elements Gallery. I wanted to find a work that calls to me. At first I didn’t find much. The art was nice, but I didn’t get any special feelings on them. Finally, I spotted an oil painting on a wrapped canvas. It was called Full Moon. The work was created by Oregon citizen, Marilyn Higginson. It’s still hard to express what I felt when I saw this painting, but I felt a sense of peace when I saw the tranquil setting of the painting. My aesthetic scanning will give a description of the work, analyze the craftsmanship, the art elements, the art principles, and give my interpretation on the work.
The piece is a standard vase with a narrow base on a supporting foot, which swells on the sides, running from the upper belly to the neck, and ends with a slightly flared lip. Looking closely at the vase, we can see that the decorator/painter decorated not only the belly of the base but also its base.
However, our trip did not last countless hours as I looked over 30 paintings in about twenty five minutes. This was not due to my lack of interest, but more to my novice mindset towards art. Art is similar to most skill activities in that people that are active in said activity can better understand and articulate the small actions that lead to a great piece of art, a great football play, or a great movie. I am embarrassed to say that I did not pay close enough attention to the intricacies of my dad's art, but I accepted to write these articles in hopes I could learn more about my dad's favorite past time.
For my enrichment report, I decided to take a trip to the Los Angeles County Museum. However, I was trapped with the challenging choice of choosing only one museum for my cultural visit. Since, there are so many prodigious and amazing museums to choose from to visit in the county. But, I have heard many great feedbacks about the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from fellow classes mates, friends and family. So, I finally, had my destination set to and planned a visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Upon my visit my attention was already fixated on the unique building layout and the many arts exhibited located all around the outside of the museum building. There were several building that housed the many different art exhibits. Such as the first building I walked into, after purchasing a ticket. This building was called the “Ahmanson” building, which housed voluminous and diverse art of the European, Islamic, South and Southeast Asian Art, Art of the Ancient World, Art of the Pacific and Others. There were also many special exhibitions that was hosted at the time of my visit, such as the modern art gallery and Rifkin Gallery for German Expressionism. One of the sculpture centered in the middle of the building of the “Ahmanson” building called “Smoke” really caught my attention. As it quite an enigmatic and stunning metal sculpture that mesmerizes illusions based on your interpretation and perspective of the piece.
It appears other minute details of the marble statue of Aphrodite have been damaged or lost, for example, the heat and base of her feet. Nonetheless, one can certify it is the statue of Aphrodite because of some of the figures that have been placed at her side. The characters beside the statue appear to represent icons commonly linked to Aphrodite. The dolphin symbolizes the birth of the goddess from the sea, and maybe that’s why people believed that she controlled animal fertility. Since the nose has broken off, it appears that the head is a mystery as to its finer and greater details.
Our world is full of so many grandiose monuments, eye-catching sculptures, and stunning statues, each having an individual story to tell. Thousands of them have been created however, only a small number of them are actually extraordinary and picture-worthy. This paper will compare and contrast two of those picture-worthy sculptures. Furthermore, I will examine the aspects of each of these sculptures. I will compare and contrast what each of them represents, the differences in texture, their size and their tone.
After getting over my initial reluctance, I got butterflies in my stomach. This was only the 2nd time I’d been to an art museum, so I wanted to make the most of it. When we first arrived, we looked around at some paintings. I visited an exclusive temporary exhibit of Edvard Munch which included a surprising amount of paintings of naked women. Nothing caught my eye in the first few galleries, but then I stumbled on an exhibit called “In Character” by Nam June Paik. As soon as I walked in, I got embarrassingly excited. I constantly had to stop myself from running around the museum like a madman. All the TV sculptures and simple, childlike drawings had been just so incredible to me. The piece that I really enjoyed the most was a sculpture called “Self-Portrait.”
The area of art is popularly known for heightening emotions, challenging stereotypes, and ultimately providing insights into how individuals view the surrounding world. The artist and the observer time and time again see pieces in overwhelmingly different ways. Individuals may wonder why this is so. What could possibly create such a drastic change from one perspective to another? When it comes down to it, experiences are the answer. The artist and the observer have different
