The books that we were required to read for Bible 115 class were Engaging God’s World – A Christian Vision Of Faith, Learning And Living by Cornelius Plantinga Jr. and The Call – Finding And Fulfilling The Central Purpose For Your Life by Os Guinness. Both books offered very useful advice for today’s Christians. Engaging God’s World is written for students and will help them make sense of their education in a Christian perspective. Both authors use scripture, humor and common sense to validate their points.
Just like the first book in the Bible, the first book of The Poisonwood Bible is named Genesis. As well as the beginning, Genesis can also mean rebirth. When characters arrive in the Congo they realize the things they brought with them are changed by Africa and can no longer be as they once were. In this way, Genesis symbolizes the process of becoming their new selves. For instance, the first chapter in The Poisonwood Bible, narrated by Orleanna, strongly shows the guilt that the Congo had left her to live with after the death of Ruth May. Likewise, Eve, the first woman in Genesis, forced all of mankind to shoulder the guilt of eating the forbidden fruit.
Sheed states on page 10 that “In theology, spirit is not only a key word, it is the key word.” Spirt is the thing we know and love and then we end up deciding at the end. So basically, our spirit is everything. It “loves” God and “knows” it loves God.
How do human beings talk about God in the face of poverty and suffering? This is the question the Book of Job raises for us. A moral and honorable man lives a prosperous, happy and fruitful life. As a wager between God and Satan on the issue of disinterested religion, they test to see if his faith and religion are actually disinterested. This leads to another question of whether human beings are capable of asserting their faith and talking about God in the face of suffering in a disinterested way. In his book “On Job: God-Talk and the Suffering of the Innocent” Gustavo Gutierrez makes the point that human beings, especially the poor, are capable of a disinterested faith and knowledge of God in the face of suffering. His application of liberation theology, way of talking about God, and interest in the poor allow Gutierrez to assert that human beings are capable of a disinterested religion in the face of poverty and suffering.

The Sermon on the Mount is a sermon given by Jesus Christ found in the book of Matthew in the Holy Bible. The beginning of this sermon includes a list of blessings called the Beatitudes. Jesus uses these to explain God’s favor towards those who are striving for righteousness. For those who had come to believe and follow Jesus as the son of God, every word that he spoke in the Sermon on the Mount was intended as words of encouragement for Jesus’s disciples and were taken as such. For those who were skeptical, the crowd, that Jesus was truly the son of God, Jesus’s words took on a totally different meaning. The Beatitudes, simple words that promote the humility of man, were explicit words of encouragement for Jesus’s disciples. Yet at the same time, to the crowd listening, the Beatitudes were an implicit invitation to become men of God by believing that this man is God in the flesh, God in spirit, God almighty, God omniscient, God omnipresent, and God omnipotent.
The sermon at the mount is a collection of teachings and sayings that Jesus preaches to people at Galilee. It takes place after Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist. This is the longest teaching by Jesus in a single preaching. It is found in the New Testament in the book of Matthew. It transverses chapter five to seven of the Gospel of Matthew. The main theme of sermon of the mountain is how people should relate with other people and God. The sermon is preached at a mountain when Jesus saw the crowd and his disciples’ were following him, he sat at a level ground on the mountain and started to preach. The Preaching’s can be divided it four major parts; The Beatitudes, Lord’s Prayer and parables.
The next clause says, “a god his fathers never knew”. This god will accomplish what Nimrod tried and failed to do; that others previously had just imagined. This “god” will be a newly created wedding between the modern world’s technological ingenuity and the demonic realm. The Pyramid’s Capstone is simply a modern equivalent of Nimrod’s Tower. The devil has tried since the beginning of man to put this in place. That is why you see so many men in history such as Nero and Hitler, who are types of antichrists, and why John, the beloved wrote, “it is the last hour; and just as you heard that Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared” (1 John 2:18). This time, God will allow these powers to unite. Satan is the god of this worldly system and humanism is its philosophy. Humanist mankind will unite with Satan’s fallen angels and together they will do battle with God and his “holy ones”, both holy angels and redeemed mankind.
Many bible scholars take the position that the antichrist being a confederacy of ten nations. “The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. He will speak against the Most High and oppress His holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time” (King James Version, Daniel. 7:24-25).

Four Brothers depicts a family of four adopted brothers that come to avenge their mother’s death in Detroit in what initially appears to be a random killing in a grocery store robbery. As a backdrop, the four brothers, Bobby, Jeremiah, Jack, and Angel, did not have a family support system, were left to fend for themselves, and were constantly involved in criminal activities. As a result of them not being accepted into any foster care outreach programs, Evelyn Mercer, a lady who had sincere intentions, took all four of them into her own home and adopted them. She became their mother. The brothers suspected their mother’s killing was not a random act and decided to take matters into their own hands. The boys’ investigation of the death reveals more reprehensible activities involving the one brother’s business dealing with a notorious local criminal and the acts of a corrupted cop. The negative social labels that the Mercer brothers experience are passed on from public officials to the citizens of the community. This labeling becomes the nemesis of the Mercer brothers.
