Berry Strauss’s “The Trojan War a New History” Book Review
Barry Strauss, professor of classics at Cornell University attempts to redefine a one of history’s biggest love affairs, the Trojan War. Strauss explains how certain events and characters from Homers “The Odyssey” might have actually existed, but also uses modern discoveries from the Bronze Age to compare Homers account to those of Egypt, the Middle East, and etc. While Homer’s epic should not be read as a historical document which recounts the Trojan War hundred percent accurately, it can still be seen as document which embodies some historical truth. The novel as a whole explains the customs, economic standing, fighting styles and beliefs of the Greeks. Strauss’s writing style allows for the book to be accessible to both students and historians. He argues that just like Franz Ferdinand was the spark which ignited World War 1, Helen on the other hand was just a spark which escalated an existing tension between the Greeks and Trojans. Strauss’s personal input on the war itself gives the novel a different outlook on the Trojan War because, it allows for readers to see beyond the facts and make connections with ideas that Strauss had made with recent discoveries and Homers epic. Strauss sectionalizes the book in 11 chapters, excluding the introduction and conclusion, and in each chapter he covers a different aspect of the
Most people think of a hero as a strong, superior, good-looking person that could never make a mistake. However, in a story called The Odyssey, a connection to real life reveals imperfections to be common in heroes. Each person has their low points and highlights, regardless of their “rank”. The author and epic poet, Homer, exemplifies our main character, Odysseus, to take on this idea of a hero throughout his writing. The time period took place in Ancient Greece, allowing Greek culture to relate to the poem. Different aspects of such culture and history may have influenced the works and creativity of Homer as well. A major point includes The Trojan War because it focuses in on Odysseus’ journey to bring Helen back home by devising a plan to destroy warriors in the city. Acknowledge this factor when reading The Odyssey, for not only evidence of heroism, but also other major points of archetypes, in which the device reflects the insights of readers in modern time and what is seen from Ancient Greek culture.
The Trojan War has long been debated on historical accuracy by experts on whether or not it actually happened. In Barry Strauss ' book, The Trojan War, he draws from multiple sources to illustrate what occurred during this time period. Strauss utilizes archeological evidence and descriptions from poets, such as Homer, surrounding the Trojan War to argue what probably happened and what was likely made up.
The Greeks and the Trojans fight for 8 intense years as many great Greek and Trojan gods and heroes die in the process.
The Trojan War was more than a series of battles between opposing forces, it was the climax of an age of heroes. The retrieval of Helen brought together many of the mythological characters of that time onto a single stage. Of the thousands of brave men who fought at Ilion, two men stood above the masses, sharing the title of hero. They were born in the line of those on Mt. Olympus, favored by the gods. Excelling in courage and skill, adored by those who followed them into battle, the actions of Achilles and Odysseus achieved a high place in Greek mythology. Through analysis we see that Odysseus and Achilles were close variations upon the same theme.
More than eight centuries ago, Gods and Goddesses lived among mortals, controlling every aspect of life. For every act of nature, rain or sun, war or peace, there was a God who was responsible. In the early centuries, religion was often considered the most important aspect of life. Mycenaean Greeks (Spartans) and the Trojans believed that the gods they prayed to were at war and because of this, they were at war too; this lasted for ten bloody years. In brief, the Trojan War began when the Supreme God of the Olympians, Zeus was asked to
The Trojan War was a conflict fought between the Greeks and the Trojans. The war lasted for ten years and it happened from 1194 to 1184 BC (timelessmyths.com).The war began around 1194 BC, at the time the kings of the rivaling cities were King Priam of Troy, and King Menelaus of Sparta. Furthermore, Priam had several wives at the time having around 50 sons and many daughters, while Menelaus had one wife named Helen and two kids by the name of Hermione and Nicostratus (Iliad). Know that when most people think of the beginning of the Trojan War, they think it started with Paris, Priam’s son took Helen away from Sparta. Some believe that Helen went willingly and thus the war began.
During the Bronze age of time (1184-1194 BC) one of the most important events happened in Greek mythology. It has been addressed many times in both literature and through oral speech. There are many different versions of this story because no one has managed to keep the same thoughts. The two most famous ones are the Odyssey and Iliad. This one is going off of the Iliad by Homer.
I analyzed the data I collected from their pre-assessment of their baseline knowledge over the events and figures in the Trojan War and how they assessed themes when watching a film trailer as an introductory set to the unit. With this information, I was able to create specific requirements for my students’ content in their writing. I continued with the idea of students identifying and analyzing themes in the texts by using these themes to make relevant connections to their audience - freshmen in high school. By having the students back up their claims with evidence from the texts and examples of activities/assignments, it highlights that they have learned the content and stories of the mythologies we have read. This would show growth from
Our Trojan War is a unique theatrical production that uses scenes from ancient texts written by Sophocles, Homer, Plato and Euripides, to discuss modern political questions on democracy. The opening scene, “In the First Version of the Story,” introduces the audience to a procession of U.S. soldiers who are dressed in camouflage. Each soldier presents a different view of Odysseus at war. In their differing points of view, Odysseus is sometimes seen as a hero while at other times he is seen as a disgrace. The group of U.S. soldiers is sent on a mission to search a home in the Middle East. The soldiers break into the house of a teacher and find a collection of hidden books of the most renounced ancient texts. After the teacher is criticized for
Many phrases we hear today can be influenced from events of the past we never realized.
The Trojan War was a great battle between the Greek and Trojan army. Many lives were lost due to this tragic event. Some say that the marriage of Peleus and Thetis started, “rolling effect,” of issues that lead to the war. The young couple decided to not invite Eris, the goddess of discord and strife. It was quite rude, for them to not invite my daughter but in their defense she can cause a lot of issues. Eris became outraged, when she was not invited. For her revenge, she crashed the wedding and brought a golden apple. Eris states, “that the fairest goddess shall obtain the golden apple.” I Hera, Queen of the Gods, thought I deserved that golden apple since I indeed am the fairest god. Unfortunately, Athena and Aphrodite though they deserved the apple. To solve this issue, Athena, Aphrodite and I traveled to see Paris, son of Priam and Prince of Troy. We all agreed, that Paris will be the judge of our fairness and the winner shall receive the golden apple. I should have no that this competition of beauty should cause issues but my arrogance got the best of me. To ensure my victory, I promised the Prince immense power, which he somehow declined. Instead of power, he choose Aphrodite’s offer. Prince wanted to marry the most beautiful women in the world, who at the time was already married to Menelaus. Aphrodite received the golden apple and Paris was sent to go woo, Helen. This deal between Aphrodite and Paris was one of the main reasons that
In the Iliad is a very interesting epic with features two main central characters that are similar in some ways but totally different in other ways. In this epic you will be introduced to Hector and Achilles. Two men from each side in the great Trojan-Greek war. They were both heroes to their people despite their clearly different contrast in their personalities. In this paper I will highlight the life of both of these two leaders of the Greek and Trojans in this epic the Iliad. Also a little will be shed of how Homer portrays the characters deeper then an average thought. I will attempt to show the complexity of his thought process in forming the climax of these two characters coming to battle.
During the time of the ancient Greeks, there was much tension between the Trojans and the Greeks, leading to the famous Trojan War. It all started when Paris, the prince of the magnificent city of Troy, abducted a woman after making a deal with the goddess of love, Aphrodite. There are many variations on how the war began and the battles that took place during it, but one event stayed for certain: The story of the large, wooden horse that lead to the downfall of Troy. Most of the information about this historical event was recorded in Homer’s famous works, The Iliad and The Odyssey. The Trojan War was started by a petty feud between three goddesses, fought by brave warriors, and recorded in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.
The Trojan War: truth or tale? The Trojan War is one of the most famous wars to have even taken place in history, however, historians do argue as to whether the war actually took place. The Trojan War was first mentioned in a book called The Iliad, which was written by a famous Greek poet, Homer. The Iliad was then followed on by the Odyssey. The city of Troy has been a mystery all throughout history, although there is evidence of ancient fortifications and buildings that have been discovered by archaeologists.
While many accounts of the Trojan war vary by author, the motivation that drove the war remains the same by all accounts, which was the beauty of Helen Of Troy. The Trojan war is proclaimed to have been a mission to rescue the most beautiful woman on earth. Being a woman myself I am very aware of the influence that a woman can have on a man’s way of thinking and behaving but can beauty alone be the thriving force to sail 1000 ships in its pursuit, 10,000 soldiers in its conquest, and engage in a 10 year long war in its honor? Love can sometimes cause you to commit acts outside of your character but something tells me that the motivation for the Trojan war went far beyond beauty, right into the hearts of anger and greed.
