Homework
Homework, as one part of the effective assessment system, is a useful assessment practice to promote students’ learning (Kauchak & Eggen, 2012). Before introducing any new topic, the teacher started her lesson by reviewing last night’s homework. Students need to receive feedback on their homework and this feedback should be made as soon as possible. For students, reviewing homework is a way to examine their understanding of the new knowledge; while for teachers, students’ performance on homework provide information about students’ strengths and weaknesses in mastering the new concept. Kauchak and Eggen (2012) also mentioned that if one question was missed by a large number of students, the teacher should explain it explicitly. The teacher in the case study took out one question that was mostly missed by students and explained it in detail on the white board. She considers students’ mistakes as a way of learning and uses them as useful examples to enhance students’ understanding of the knowledge.

Cognitive Apprenticeship Cognitive apprenticeship refers to the relationship in which an expert provides guidance for a less experienced learner to achieve a specific learning goal (Woolfolk & Margetts, 2016).
