Homework, as one part of the effective assessment system, is a useful assessment practice to promote students’ learning (Kauchak & Eggen, 2012). Before introducing any new topic, the teacher started her lesson by reviewing last night’s homework. Students need to receive feedback on their homework and this feedback should be made as soon as possible. For students, reviewing homework is a way to examine their understanding of the new knowledge; while for teachers, students’ performance on homework provide information about students’ strengths and weaknesses in mastering the new concept. Kauchak and Eggen (2012) also mentioned that if one question was missed by a large number of students, the teacher should explain it explicitly. The teacher in the case study took out one question that was mostly missed by students and explained it in detail on the white board. She considers students’ mistakes as a way of learning and uses them as useful examples to enhance students’ understanding of the knowledge.

Homework offers more practice that can’t be completed in class time so students can master the subject content. This practice at home is essential, because American students already spend much less time studying academic content when compared to students of other countries. A study by the National Education Commission on Time and Learning found that “students abroad are required to work on demanding subject matter at least twice as long as US students” (Marzano & Pickering, 2007). With that said, the fact that students in countries like Japan, Germany, and France outperform students in the US is not that surprising. A skilled teacher will also construct an appropriate classroom environment where students openly discuss, reflect on and make sense of tasks set before them (Clements et al, 1990). Through pedagogical constructivism (Noddings, 1990, p.14) I believe that in order to teach well, “we need to know what our students are thinking, how they produce the chain of little marks we see on their papers, and what they can do (or want to do) with the material we present to them (Noddings, 1990, p.15).” Through pedagogical constructivism, teacher should warrant the use of more effective diagnostic tools, such as understanding ways of thinking, methodical errors and misconceptions (Noddings, 1990, p.15). This is achieved by using an array of effective teaching strategies.

This scale, is directly related to communication. The results of this core scale suggest both Chris and Olympia feel as if their issues that they have, at times never get resolved. Further both strongly agree that they engage in very serious dispute over small or unimportant issues. Another dynamic that both Chris and Olympia scored high in was in the dynamic of partner dominance. Though Chris scored slightly higher than his wife Olympia, they both feel that their partner is trying to take control of or mange their life. This can be very contributory to the low PCA score in the scale of conflict resolution. Whenever the couple experiences a dispute if both are only interested in forcing their views on each other or they both interpret each other as controlling, they may become defensive and something small can escalate quickly. Similarly to communication, conflict resolution is a two person task in a marriage. Chris may need to be sensitive to his wife’s past of being abused and how it may effect her opening up.
In the practice of teaching, it is the responsibility of a teacher not only to teach students subject matter, but to teach students in order to enable them to grow and develop as a person. The second educational need is the inclusion of social skills. Educators have the responsibility to provide a welcoming and safe environment, where children feel accepted and part of a group. Through social interactions children can share knowledge and develop confident self-identities (DEEWR, 2009). Debates over the benefits of homework include “immediate impact on the retention and understanding of the material it covers” (Cooper, 1989, p.86) and downsides of homework include “satiation, denial of access to leisure time and community activities; parental interference; cheating; and increased differences between high and low achievers” (Cooper, 2006, p.7) have led to a see-saw of support and objection regarding homework. There is support from several studies (Maltese, Tai, Fan, 2012; Cooper, Robinson, Patall, 2006; Falkenberg & Barbetta, 2013) that cite homework as a source of increasing students’ achievement level. For this assignment, I had the pleasure of working with the same student I worked with for the first assignment. My student is in second grade and I well be referring to her as J.R. While working with J.R., I assessed her using four different assessments and I really got to understand her as a learner. This assignment was different from the first assignment because I was able to dig deeper into her literacy knowledge and I was able to identify many of her strengths and areas of need. I feel like I understand J.R. a lot better because I now know about her personally and educationally.
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
