In the short story, “The Location of the River” by, Barry Lopez, the author talks about the travels of an explorer named Benjamin Foster. The author is able to describe several different settings that Foster explored through his travels by reading first hand accounts from Fosters personal journal. Lopez, uses the different settings that foster described in his journals in order to introduce the audience to the overall feeling of the story. By describing the setting, the author lays the groundwork for the rest of the story for instance, Lopez can make the story seem lifelike, he can also help show the emotions the characters are feeling, and he can also attempt to instill fear in the reader.
