Was I surprised by the conclusion of The Locket, during the story of The Locket a solider dies and he is wearing his lovers locket, it has a picture of her parents. But after he dies a priest finds him and gets his locket and gives it to his loved one. What happens is that she never saw a body until the same priest sees the locket and takes her to go see him. So he was never dead and Edmond and Octavia lived together happy. I was not surprised by the ending of The Locket, they foreshadowed the ending since he died. How they just took the locket and didn't say anything about the body, or how he died. That was just one of reasons why I didn't believe he was dead. That was just one of the reasons, the other reason is the priest reaction when
The title leads you to believe the story will go in another direction, which makes the ending a surprise.
At the conclusion of The Locket Edmond told Octavie that he didn't lose the locket but that it was stolen from him. I found the ending confusing but after reading it over I found the ending predictable. The conclusion of the locket was predictable because of three major details. The locket being stolen was predictable because the lockets description, Edmond's messmates, and Edmond's battles as a Confederate soldier. The locket was stolen for its overall value.
Often times, a reader becomes shocked by the ending of a story. They never saw the twist ending coming and it leaves them speechless. Could the reader’s initial surprise have been avoided? Most likely, yes. Authors frequently put clues into their stories and books that can help a reader figure out the conclusion. In the story “ Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, written by Ambrose Bierce, the reader is taken on a great escape from the main character’s execution. The unexpected ending cuts the escape short by revealing Peyton Farquhar, the leading character, is actually dead and swinging from Owl Creek Bridge. Many clues are planted within Peyton’s escape that clue the reader in to realizing the true ending.
The ending was a definite surprise for anyone that watched the film for the first time, but after going further and analyzing the film it is obvious that the events that took place were symbolic for what was going to happen. The film, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge did not give nearly the same amount of information as the short story, but both tell the same story and share the same theme. We as an audience got to see the true definition of one’s life flashing before their
The locket is significant because one gets the idea that something important and special is going to be associated with it. The author is using the literary element of foreshadowing when describing the locket. In the lesson, a soldier said, "Thats a charm; some kind of hoodo business that one o'them priests gave him to keep him out o'trouble." This implies that the locket may have magical capabilities. This leads me to believe that the end of the story will have a happy conclusion. Another example in the story that makes the ending predictable is when Octavia and Edmund's father are riding together. He tells her to remove her veil. At first, she was very confused and anxious about this, but out of respect, she does take the veil off. He states, "On such a beautiful spring day one can only believe in miracles." Again, foreshadowing comes in to play. This made me believe that Edmund will return alive. The setting is important. As cited in www.gradesaver.com, "The setting foreshadows Edmund's unanticipated and figurative resurrection. He died in Autumn, but was re-born in spring." Spring is the time when flowers grow and the earth is alive. Autumn and winter signify death and dying until the seasons change once
In the short story The Locket, it is believed that the author Chaplains writing style has kept the readers guessing throughout the story. Many would agree that the ending of the story was a shocker and few expected that conclusion. They would agree that the father-in-law proceeding with the funeral arrangements supporting the assumption the deceased person in the coffin was Edmund because he had the locket around his neck played into the authors plot twist. People would also say that the end of the story was intriguing, especially when Octavia opened the letter from the priest, returning her locket to her expressing his sorrow of the death of her husband Edmund. Only to find out at the very end Edmund was not dead and he was waiting for her at the door.
Four confederate soldiers where talking over the fire while waiting for orders from Edmond. Edmond had on a necklace and the other soldiers noticed and asked about it. Edmond told them it was a catholic token to protect him from danger, and it has protected him the whole time he's been at war. He told them that Octavia had given it to him. The locket contained a picture of he parents and the date they were married. Later that evening war broke out and a clergyman walked into the aftermath of the war trying to save the souls of people that may be alive. He saw a soldier with a locket and tore it away from him. He sent the locket with a letter to whoever was closest to the person that the locket belonged to.
I was pleasantly surprised by the ending of the The Locket. First Kate Chopin definitely knew how to make the boy who stole the locket sound like Edmond. Then how Octavie was dressed in all black with the locket around her neck once more. Then to add to how she was dressed how she even acted in the second part of the book would lead you to think that Edmond was actually gone.
At the conclusion of “The Locket” I was surprised by the unexpectedly happy ending. As I read it, I was lead to believe that Edmond had died in the war and Octavia would spend the rest of her life living like her “old quiet and sad” Aunt Tavie. When Octavia and Edmond were reunited at the end, the story became a happy one. However, after realizing the twist at the end, I noticed there were clues through the story that gave away the end.
My first reason on thinking that the ending of the locket was surprising was by the priest coming to her house. If you think about it from her perspective what other reason would the priest come to her house with a letter saying that? Also by the letter saying “The autumn day drawing to its close, with the gold and the red fading out in the west, and the night gathering its shadows to cover the faces of
"'Ain't that a charm you got round your neck?' 'It must be, Nick,' returned Edmond with a smile. 'I don't know how I could have gone through this year and a half without it.'" As I had previously mentioned, the locket is Edmond's lucky charm. The man that had said nothing didn't have the luck from the locket, so he was unlucky enough to be killed. The reader is meant to believe that Edmond was killed with the locket on. This leads to confusion to how this could
Though it did have a logical ending, it may not have the best ending. The author could have made it better easily.
My feelings on the conclusion of "The Locket" is confusion. The constant changing of topic made it hard to figure out what was happening. Since the author of the story keeps switching perspectives, your original idea gets cluttered and has to be changed. The point of view changed from Edmond, to a vulture, to Octavie. The author does this to always have you on your toes. The ending of this narrative wasn't predictable because there was no main focus on one character, not enough of the story to hypothesize a conclusion, and the different moods throughout the story.
At first it was confusing to me to figure out who the dead man at the beginning actually was because the ending actually shocked me with the outcome. The Locket refers to love and war, this topic completes the story structuring it into what it is now. Octavie holds a locket close to her heart reminding her of Edmond who is described as her love but is later assumed dead causing Octavie to be dressed in all black which means she was either getting ready for his funeral or mourning over the death of Edmond.
I feel that the ending of Kate Chopin's "The Locket" was very unexpected. I was very surprised and happy for Octavie that Edmond had returned to her. It was a very happy ending for such a sad story. When I was reading the story, I would have never guessed how it was going to end. I actually went back and read it again just to see what I had missed.
