Great article as Paula Broadwell is right when she says "the scandal doesn't surprise her." For example, as a 29 year old infantry veteran who served in the Marine Corps 8 years ago, "this scandal is nothing new" as it's taught and valued to be "boost morale." Even 8 years ago when I was in the Marine Corps nearly every infantry marine entertained the idea (including our leaders) by using phrases like "put her on the wall of shame;" "she's just another San Diego Jodie," or "share the yank with your devil dogs." In fact, it didn't matter if you were "a boot private with a hot girlfriend" or "a Marine who just came back from deployment," we we're instructed by our fire team leaders, our squad leaders, & to a great extent our staff NCO's & CO's
Who is Oliver North, and how was he involved in the Iran-Contra Scandal? Was he ever held accountable for his actions?
The scourge of sexual assault hangs over the reputation and combat effectiveness of the United States (U.S.) military. Marine Corps policy states that sexual assault is ?completely incompatible with our core values of honor, courage, and commitment.?[endnoteRef:1] Despite this stance and incremental legislative and recent administrative changes, an overzealous deference to traditional chain of command involvement continues to produce inadequate results. A perceived widespread culture of reprisal and ?circling the wagons? discourages
The United States Marine Corps is unfortunately involved in an underlying issue within its own ranks called hazing. Hazing is an overlooked problem being dealt with today in the military as it is enforced and prevented. As hazing is becoming more commonly identified, Marines are being held accountable. As you read this paper you will find out about this issue. You will be engaged in the Marine Corps order that covers this very topic. General James F. Amos scrutinizes the act of hazing in saying, “Hazing is contrary to our core values of honor, courage, and commitment and is prejudicial to good order and discipline.” He continues to explain that hazing greatly reduces morale, esprit de corps, pride, professionalism, and unit cohesiveness.
Throughout history, the United States Military has faced numerous scandals. From its role in the Vietnam War, to the Iran-Contra Affair, to the Iraq War, to the abuse and denial of due process rights to detainees currently held indefinitely at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; the Department of Defense has undeniably raised many questions about its ethics and treatment toward both civilians and fellow members of the Armed Forces alike. One recent scandal, which would now appear to be becoming the standard, is that of sexual assault within the military. However, due to a campaign of awareness, grassroots activism, and pressuring elected officials to do what is right, things are now beginning to change.
The Marine Corps historical characteristics after the Civil War could be based in part on survivability and the need for the Marine Corps to prove its worth to the United States as a Military Force. The Marine Corps part in the Civil War had been small and not altogether impressive. Both the Army and the Navy did not regard the Marine Corps as useful. This paper will in effect touch on the Marine Corps history from after the Civil War to World War I. It will then converge on a discussion with regards to the fight against the disestablishment of the Marine Corps. (Simmons/Moskin 1998)
Although many things about engineering are positive there is a dark side. We depend on them and while engineers are making innovations for us, and maintaining life as the way we know it they also struggle with ethical issues such as plagiarism, confidentiality, and whistleblowing. Just like the list of golden rules we learned as young children, engineers uphold a list of ethical rules to guide them to make the ethically correct decision when one of these situations arise. Bribery the act of receiving or giving a gift with something required in return is another example of an ethical issue that can entice engineers to break the code (“Gifts and Bribes”, 2006). Unfortunately this was the case for a former manager of the Army Corps of Engineers whose greed caused him to break the ethical canons to “avoid deceptive acts”, to “conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, and lawfully as to enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession”, and finally to “hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public” (“Code of Ethics”). His misconduct is an example of the unethical decisions some engineers make.
“All this for a guy?!” I thought to myself as I lay in my rack staring out the window at the night sky. It had been three days since I was able to sleep. Since departing home, there were days of signing papers, collecting uniform, getting yelled at by drill sergeants, marching here, marching there… of all branches of service I decided to join the United States Marines. My reasons were none other than to elope. Whether or not it was good for me to leave, I look at my life now and feel blessed and privileged, but I also wonder what circumstances I would find myself in or if I would have grown up had I stayed in my home town of Union City, California. To keep my family safe, to figure life out on my own and discovering faith are
Accountability is everything within the Marine Corps and within the working world. Unit cohesion could not exist without accountability. Good communication could not happen without good accountability. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines accountability as: “the quality or state of being accountable; especially: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions”
What is the importance of professionalism? First, we must answer another question. What is professionalism? Professionalism is most commonly describe as acting like a professional. A professional is defined " characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession : exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace."[merriam-webster.com]
Accountability…. What does it mean? The responsibility of an individual or organization to account for its activities, accept responsibility for them, and to clearly show the results. The army definition of accountability is “the obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, funds or soldiers”. Accountability should not be taken lightly, it is important for NCOs and squad leaders to have accountability over their soldiers. This could be at a formation or meeting, or through a phone call or text message. This is one of the most important things to make sure you have in order in the Army. Poor accountability can effect not on the person missing
A million thoughts were running through my head as we drove from Savannah, Georgia International Airport in the dead of night. I along with 50 other new recruits were herded on to a bus and told to put our heads down as they drove around for what seemed like hours. The recruiters used this as a disorienting and scare tactic, so we would have no idea where we were. As we arrived at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, I thought to myself, “holy shit, am I really doing this?” As the bus pulled to a stop a drill instructor stepped on to the bus. He began shouting unintelligible words at us in a raspy, gruff voice. The only words I was able to understand were “off” and “bus”. I didn’t give it a second thought, I was off the bus as fast
I remember this case, word broke right after I got to my first duty station after joining the Army. There are so many military members who think that military doctors and dentists aren't qualified and licensed medical personnel. Cases like this don't help changing the minds of these people. It is sad that in this case they took advantage of soldiers and their families that would do anything to keep their injured service member alive. Sadly the trend in most of these fraudulent cases seems to be
Senior enlisted leaders were asked to come up with solutions to stop suicide in the Marine Corps. I am going to talk about three topics that I feel are the best solutions to suicide; (1) All hands responsibility, (2) Spiritual guidance, (3) Mental ship awareness program. Suicide is all hands responsibility because Marines are one family that strive to do their best for the best interest of the institution. Marines care for one another and the moment someone takes their life, it has a great impact on our emotional state of mind, mission readiness, and lack of training at all levels on how to deal with a suicide, why is it important to talk about it vice walking away and let the time cure the pain or the unanswered question. After any suicide I find it as a critical point to educate the force on why taking your life is not the solution, why any suicide is a death that touches someone (Kelly, 2015). Educating Marines that there is a solution to any problem and giving the solutions is important because at least there chances to make a choice just went up because all those resources within reach.
According to Simon (2008), In January 2007, President George Bush declared a contemporary method to the war in Iraq. By that time sectarian and insurgent heating were accelerating far of any dominance. New Democratic in Washington was asking for ending the war in Iraq, but Bush refused that demanding and pushed for winning the war according to his policy that he promised to accomplish in Iraq (Simon, 2008). So, he made his decision not to retreat and go for concluding his mission with "The surge" in Iraq (Simon, 2008). According to Simon (2008), the administration of Bush, generally , is holding the responsibility of failing the surge in Iraq.
Scandal is a political thriller that takes problems that are relevant in today’s society and portrays them in a way that is as equally complex and morally ambiguous as in reality. Just like many other dramas, Scandal includes self-contained narratives in its framework. This means that a new viewer can tune in every week and be able to understand the story, but may miss storylines that have been going on across multiple episodes. This particular episode, called “The Lawn Chair,” deals with racial issues that are prevalent in the United States. More specifically, it deals with a white cop shooting a black teen. It is clear that the message this episode is trying to send is that these issues are more complex than we think. Scandal’s formal choices, effective use of character types, and narrative structure help the viewer visualize the complex nature of the situation at hand.
