Tomorrow when the war began: Monologue Rationale Good morning/afternoon everyone. Today, my monologue will consist of a scene from tomorrow when the war began. I will be taking on the perspective of Mr Clement, who is a dentist in the town of Wirrawee. He wakes up in the hospital one day and remembers everything that has happened. He was on the run when He was discovered by Robyn and Lee- who were in the city to find out more about what was happening at the showgrounds. Lee was shot by one of the soldiers. Robyn pleads to Mr clement to help Lee with the wound. He reluctantly agrees then proceeds to take off. Monologue I do not know how much longer I have left. Even though I am in the comfort of the hospital, I need to remember- this isn’t …show more content…
I don’t know what they are doing right now, but there is one thing I know for sure. That night, I saw the courage and determination in their eyes and their will to fight. [Sigh] It all started on the Show day. Around 6 in the evening, I was expecting my wife to be back home for dinner. Two hours passed and she still didn’t show up. What is going on with that woman? [Annoyed hand gesture] I went down to the showgrounds to check [confused look] and I realise that something is not right. As I took in the surroundings, it clicked in my mind. Soldiers, make shift tents and guns. This was an invasion! In that three hours I was there, I soaked up as much information as I could. I decided that I should run and hope for the best that I would survive. As I run back into town, I meet a few dozen people like myself hiding out and they give me so much information. I hide. Then, they came. At first, I thought they were just some other people like me. But I was wrong. They were two teenagers on the run. A girl and a boy. They reminded me of my kids… [sigh] What I noticed next, was that the boy had a wound. Not just any wound, a gunshot wound. He was wincing in so much pain, it was unbearable to watch. The girl…she was panicking so hard…she was shaking as she tore a piece of clothing and put it on the …show more content…
As I stood up and shuffled towards the other end, she turned around and caught my eye. Crap! [Look up] Try not to look in her eyes. She recognises me as her dentist and pesters me to help the boy-Lee. I refuse, but she makes me look at his wounds then look in his pleading, despairing eyes. Everything around me falls apart. Would I forgive myself if I just left him here, with that gruesome wound? It would heal eventually but the pain, is too unbearable. A bunch of thoughts whirl in my head all at once. [Grumble] Fine! I use the most knowledge I have from dentistry and I apply it to stitching Lee’s wounds. As I stitch it up, he winces but does not shed a tear. I try to fight back my tears. I have to keep a strong and tough face, even though I am breaking down inside. I can’t let those kids see me in that state. Not now. Anything simple would set their bottle of emotions off. They are being so strong. As I pack up and prepare to leave, the girl-who I leant her name was Robyn, asked me to join them and their group of friends. There were seven of them altogether. I thought about it. I could join them, be like their mentor and help them. However, as I put it into context, I realised, I will be more of a burden than help. An old man compared to seven other teenagers, I would slow them down and put them at risk. Patrols are everywhere, I would not want to cause hurt to
World War I took a devastating toll, not only by dismantling numerous countries economically, but by crippling the millions of dutiful soldiers as well. These soldiers, devoid of any full understanding of the reason for this brutal war, destroyed their entire lives for the cause. All Quiet on the Western Front depicts the how World War I ultimately devastated Paul and his soldier friends, psychologically and physically.
Experiences in war and the drastic change in everyday life from home versus in war can take a large toll on soldiers. One of the most significant impacts war has on soldiers is the detrimental cutting of ties between soldiers relations with their home lives once they return from war. In the book All Quiet On the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, several symbols including butterflies, potato pancakes, and books are used to express the cut ties between soldiers and their home lives.

For the first time tonight, I notice the shreds in the purple fabric. “Oh, Alice, I'm so sorry.” A sob catches in my throat.
World War I began as a European conflict, only gradually did it develop into a world war. The European nations started war with a prestigious vision about war only to be mentally and emotionally devastated by the truth of the Great War. The growing tensions between the European countries were caused by militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. There were many immediate and long-term impacts which subsequently followed. It was a conflict between the allied powers and central powers. The Central Powers comprised of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria, while the Allied Powers involved France, Britain, Russia, Serbia, United States and Belgium. The timeless classic All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
"Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori" War and an honorable death are portrayed as grand and exalted deeds throughout history, even though a war is a series of bloody conflicts that rack havoc on the human mind. WW1 is one of the prominent examples of this. Several philosophers and individuals have pointed out this fact and even published literary works about it. All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the greatest cases of this because it accurately shows the emotions, living conditions, and hardships of the WW1 soldiers.
World War one was a war of severe tribulation. resulting in over 50 million deaths, it was one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Known as the “Western Front”, the border of Germany and France was the site to some of the bloodiest battles of the war. There are very few novels that truly exemplify the events that took place along this front. Erich Maria Remarque’s novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Displays important themes, imagery, and symbolism, that help show how this great war affected the soldiers, the countries involved and the world.
In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, the main character and narrator, Paul Baumer, is a young man just graduated from high school. He enlists to fight for Germany during World War I because of a misguided sense of extreme nationalism, and the hunt for glory. However, when he experiences the horrors of fighting on the front first-hand, the realities of war begin to shape him into someone unrecognizable. Remarque utilizes characterization and intense imagery to illustrate how war affects not only a person, but a whole generation of those who are about to come of age.
We were having a tough time during the war, because our father was out fighting. One day, we got a letter in the mail from the Western Union. It read: We regret to inform you STOP that Charles Mayfield, Sr. STOP has been killed. We all looked at each other in silence as our eyes started to get wet. The cons outnumbered the pros in the months directly after the war.
My heart leapt in my throat- I did my best to try and regulate my breathing so I wouldn’t give away my position with massive, choking gulps of air. Closing my eyes, I tried to re-collect blissful memories, ones that were far away from this state of affairs. I couldn’t calm down; this was so bad- what was I going to do? His steps were getting closer; they were getting louder. I panicked, I panicked.
One motif that is presented is presented in the novel is nature. In the beginning of the boom nature resembled glorious thoughts. Some examples include poppies, which represents optimism for the future and the trenches and shell holes, which represent protection. Then at the end of the novel, nature represented no end to pain and death. A few examples would be the heat which represented no soon end. Another example would be the cold which took place in the last few months of the war. The cold represents the end of life. Nature is one of the motifs represented in the novel.
World War I was the first war that encompassed multiple countries from different continents. The war had disastrous effects on society and the soldiers that fought in it. Much literature was created to highlight the war and its effects on the soldier involved. Erich Maria Remarque wrote a novel depicting a German soldier’s life on the western front, “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Ernst Jünger wrote a memoir showcasing the events and experiences he witnessed while being a German soldier on the western front. Both books have been critically-acclaimed as great literature on the First World War.
My mates and I sat there and watched as 600 men geared up for battle. While the mysterious truth was hidden deep, so very deep down in the mind of an unknown. The fact that could have very well saved six hundred lives that dreadful day. A slight depressing mood surrounded and darkened the part of generals. The soldier’s however had a strangely different character about them. They were satisfied, hopeful and armed for anything that they may come across. Loyalty, honour, glory and courage stood out clearly in their eyes. The looks they expressed were nothing compared to usual. It was the look of nothing. However, the war was about
I lived through the end of the world. Quite the conversation starter isn’t it? It came fast and quickly, wiping the human race out in huge numbers. It snuck up on us like a dark shadow and no one saw it coming. Most people reading this would think that aliens invaded, or a huge disease spread throughout the world and knocked us all out. As cool as that would’ve been i have to admit, that's not what happened at all. We ended from our own destruction.
I am Ella Karcewski reporting to you on this gloomy Spring evening, hoping that this war may soon be over. I am currently experiencing a day that I will never forget. The images that I am seeing, and the heartbreaking pain that I am feeling will never be erased from my naive mind. I feel nearly speechless and am saddened for those drastically affected by this war. I am encountering a tragedy as soldiers and horses alike are collapsing to the ground, screams of pain coming from their courageous bodies. Pouring rain is drenching horses and soldiers, and darkness is curtained over the gloomy sky. Ominous clouds fill the atmosphere above, and it seems that the sun wouldn’t dare peek out on this bellicose April day in 1915. All of this French territory
