Twelve Years A Salve is a movie that is relevant to our class because it is one of the most recent films to deal with the history of race and ethnicity in our country. ‘’12 Years A Slave’’ is also relevant as it demonstrates the use of race and ethnicity in modern film and the questions that arise from it. This film portrays the ugliness of slavery since a person born free from the first day of his or her life. The reason for that is to show us how white people were using African American people in the past and how the revolutions have changed all that over the years. The meaning of this movie is that African American people should stand for themselves when they lose their freedoms, rather than waiting for the white people to help them. Solomon is a very talented violinist and appreciated by many white rich financiers. In his family, he also is a very happy man lives with his beautiful wife along with his two kids. Solomon is a free man who is living in a small town where free African Americans interlace with whites, and the African American Slaves treated very well from the white people in the south. In fact, Solomon was able to provide anything for his family even some luxuries, but he not as a well-of one. Before Solomon kidnapped, he went to the store to purchase some items for his wife and his Children. A slavery suffering started when Solomon introduced to two gentlemen by Mr. Moor, Merrill and Abram. Solomon was presented as a talented and an expert
The film reminds us that “slavery and its aftermath involved the emasculation-physical as well as psychological - of black men, the drive for black power was usually taken to mean a call for black male power, despite the needs of (and often with the complicity of) black women. That continues to result in the devaluing of black female contributions to the liberation struggle and in the subordination of black women in general.”4
The movie thirteen touched many important factors of adolescent’s development. Some of the ones I want to concentrate in this paper are: family system, developmental tasks, and peer pressure.
Slavery has been a deep wound in early American history and still to this date we see the reaping effects of our past. Slavery was a vile environment and a disgusting time in history, which had no humanity, it was inhumane. In American history we seldom hear the stories of the free new native African Americans in the 17th century. Solomon Northup was a native African American free man whom was kidnapped and sold to slavery. The hope in my research is not to victimize Solomon Northup, instead trace the history of slavery in all its forms to make sense of the origins of wealth inequality and the roots of discrimination we see today.
He is wondering why white people have freedom and black people not. Why do the white people think that they have freedom to rule over the black people? Why do they think they are better? And also why they can sell a free man into slavery. Solomon also said to the other slaves at the farm on which he was sold to, “I don’t want to survive. I want to live.”( Solomon Northup, 12 years a slave). He knows the feeling of freedom in contrast to the other slaves there at the farm who were born into slavery. Solomon also knows that his wife and children are still waiting for him and that he won’t see them again if he can’t get his freedom back. That's why he ask why the white people could take your freedom away and why they are not punished for it.
A Story that is sad and sickening in its own way, The way Solomon had been treated and sold into slavery was terrifying the first time you read through it. As I talk about Solomon's life in slavery, The underground railroad, and the Civil War, this is a short essay on the horrors of what people have gone through before.
Solomon Northup was a free African-American man until he was sold into slavery for 12 years. His wife and children in New York had no idea where he was and if he’d ever return. Solomon Northup’s story of breaking the chains of slavery and becoming a free man again is heroic and shows his perseverance even under the harsh circumstances. Northup was a free man who lived in New York with his wife, Anne Northup, and three children. He was very talented when playing the fiddle.
“12 years a slave” is a book about the slavery in the pre-Civil War South. It was written based on a true story that happened to Solomon Northup who is also the author of the book. The story was a violent protestation, but also full of love without any hatred of Black people, who were being slaved for all their life. The Slavery was abolished in North America; however, it still existed in the South America at that time. Solomon Northup, a Black citizen of New York City, was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1851. He was rescued at a Louisianan cotton plantation in 1853. After being freed, Solomon Northup wrote the book “12 years a slave” to recount the years of terrible abuses that he had been bearing under the Slavery. Northup’s story was regarded as a source of inspiration in Civil War which contributed in the democracy of United States as today. It was also a piece of art as well as a work of human insight which awaked the human love, conscious fight, dignity protection, and the freedom of man.
The film 12 Years a Slave, an adaptation of the 1853 autobiography by a slave named Solomon Northup, depicts his everyday life after his rights and freedoms are ripped away. Through the unpleasant slave auction scenes to the sickening slave punishments, 12 Years a Slave is a heartbreaking story that unfortunately conveys the harsh truth on the issues surrounding slavery. Consequently, during the film there are many themes and events that trigger different thoughts and reactions varying between viewers, and importantly a better understanding of Solomon Northup’s story and slavery itself.
In the book 12 Years A Slave written from a primary source by Solomon Northup based on a true story describes the triumphant journey Solomon Northup goes through as he never lost hope of regaining his freedom and resisted the dehumanization of enslavement in many ways. Solomon was born a free black man in New York in 1808 while his father, Mintus was born a slave and gained his freedom as their master passed away also inheriting their masters last name "Northup". Growing Solomon worked on a farm with his dad and soon after his dad died in 1829 he soon married a women named Anne Hampton in which they soon moved to Saratoga Springs, New York and had three children of their own. They were living like any other free person was and soon Solomon was working in many industries and Anne established herself as a cook and in the 1830 's Solomon had a reputation of being a well played violinist. In 1841 Solomon had became unemployed and was looking for an occupation, he ran into Merrill Brown and Abram Hamilton in who then offers him a job in a circus playing the violin. As they arrive in Washington D.C. which is slave territory, he begins to become sick and passes out which was planned by Merrill and Abram to poison and kidnap him in the slave territory and sell him in which he soon wakes up in chains in a slave pen. Solomon 's first master was James H. Burch who he was sold by the two men who had
During the antebellum era, issues of race and equality persisted to plague social progress in the United States. Instrumental in leading the assault against women and African Americans, white slave owning male in the American antebellum South reign supreme in both the private and public spheres respectively. Although that is not to suggest that African Americans held any real power within the public sphere, instead the African Americans depicted in the movie, Twelve Years a Slave, were used as tangible property. As tangible property, the masters in the movie used their slaves to gain social perfection within the public sphere. Women, however, were purely relegated to the private sphere. Twelve Years a Slave did an exemplary job of expanding the notion of a women and slaves as intellectual and physical property within the broader construct of American antebellum society.
[1] Before I start this essay, I feel the need to remind the reader that I find slavery in all its forms to be an oppressive and terrible institution, and I firmly believe that for centuries (including this one) bigotry is one of the most terrible stains on our civilization. The views I intend to express in the following essay are in no way meant to condone the practices of slavery or racism; they are meant only to evaluate and interpret the construction of slavery in film.
The movie Twelve Angry Men is about the twelve jurors that could adjust their influence in a decision-making process for conviction an eighteen years-old boy, whether the boy guilty or not guilty in murdering of his father. It represents a perfect example for applicable of a work group development framework. It also has examples of influence techniques among a group’s members. This paper is looking at those specific examples in the movie and focusing in analysis the reasons why Juror 8 is so much more effective than others in the meeting.
