Introduction “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006) starts out with an individual scene of each character, Olive is watching Miss USA, the grandpa, Edwin, is doing drugs, the older brother, Dwayne, is working out, the father, Richard, is giving a motivational speech to very few viewers, the uncle, Frank is in a hospital room, and the mom, Sheryl, is frantically driving and smoking, trying to get somewhere in a hurry. The movie starts out with Sheryl picking up Frank from the hospital and welcoming him into their already full house. Frank was in the hospital because he tried to commit suicide. Frank was suicidal because his boyfriend left him for another guy who was Frank’s colleague and competition. Frank also ended up losing his job and house. In…show more content…
Throughout the movie, he is very eager to hear back from a guy that thinks he will be able to sell a book and do tours of his motivational speeches, but only gets bad news and finds out that he has failed at his endeavors. Next is Dwayne, the oldest son, who has taken a vow of silence until he accomplishes his goal of becoming a jet pilot. He claims that he despises the family. On the road trip he finds out he is colorblind and can’t fly jets, has a breakdown, and breaks his oath of silence. Next is the daughter, Olive, who is very sweet and is why the family is traveling to California together. She gets along with just about everybody. The grandfather, Edwin, is Richard’s dad. He is very blunt and does drugs. He got kicked out of his retirement home for doing heroine. Lastly is the uncle, Frank, who is Sheryl’s brother. He gets along with Dwayne pretty well and is recovering from a suicide attempt. This family is very diverse. Although this family has a foundation of a nuclear family, with a married man and woman and two kids, the additions of the grandpa and uncle make it an extended family. An extended family is where grandparents, aunts, and uncles play a role in children’s upbringings. (Edwards, n.d) In this movie Edwin and Frank will step in and care for the kids.
