“Your destiny is in your hands, bhai”. In the movie Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle we are shown glimpses of the wider field of fate and destiny. Through visual and oral features the audience is able to achieve a broad understanding of this idea which is conveyed throughout the course of the film. Each character shows varying amounts of control over their lives. Salim maintains a large amount of control while Latika obtains little. However Jamal experiences both outside influences as well as his own which influence his fate, these are displayed though several flashbacks in the movie. At the core of the film lies the question “Has the path we walk on already been paved for us or do we ultimately influence our destiny?” We are addressed with this idea from the beginning of the film, when a question is posed to the viewers in the format of a question from “Who wants to be a millionaire”. “Jamal Malik is one question away from winning 20 million rupees. How did he do it?...a) He cheated, b) He’s lucky, c) He is a genius, d) It is written”. We are provided with insight to this idea through the way the options are presented, almost as if the way the rest of the film is played out is based on the lucky guess made at the beginning. This contrasts the rest of the film because Jamal 's answers are based on anything but luck as the answers are weaved into significant events in his life, however the factor of luck may be present in his life due to the way the answers and
