Demetria Devonne Lovato, also known as Demi Lovato, is wildly known for her acting and singing career. She was born in Dallas, Texas in 1992. Growing up in her household consisted of living with her mother and two sisters. Demi’s acting career began when she was 10 years old as a regular cast member on Barney and Friends. However, she made her big debut acting in Disney’s Camp Rock with the Jonas Brothers, a boy band that was very popular at the time and contributed to her success. Additionally, she has been seen as a judge on the X-Factor, has been the spokes girl for Hasbro "Hit Clips", and has done some work with voiceovers for both television and the radio (Billboard.com). Within the last few years, Demi has been in the spotlight for coming out about her mental health issues. Most recently, Demi has been involved in a variety of mental health campaigns, and speaking to the public to raise awareness.
Mental Health Issue
The diagnosis that Demi was given is Bipolar Disorder, which was discovered in 2010. “Bipolar, or manic-depressive, disorder is a frequent, severe, mostly recurrent mood disorder associated with great morbidity. The lifetime prevalence of bipolar disorder is 1.3 to 1.6%. The mortality rate of the disease is two to three times higher than that of the general population” (Muller-Oerlinghausen et. al, 2002, p.241).
