The novel, The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton, was a fictional story told by a fourteen-year old boy who was struggling with right from wrong in a society which he believed he did not fit in, leaving him an outsider. The book takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Hinton was originally from. Overall, the book was for teenagers, about teenagers and written by a teenager. The Outsiders was first published in 1967, when Hinton was seventeen years old. It was filmed in 1983 and was directed by Francis Ford, had millions of views and was “the most recognized film of the decade.” The book became an immediate hit, reaching the best-selling young-adult novel of all times.
The action in the short novel is simple and straightforward and covers typical issues for teens that are faced in the 1960s and today. The author broke ground in the genre of Young Adult fiction, exceeding established barriers in her portrayal of prejudice, class conflict and violence. The book tells a story about Ponyboy Curtis, the main character with his two brothers Sodapop who is sixteen, and Darrel (Darry) who is twenty and their everyday lifestyle. All three of them grew up in the East Side, known as Greasers, the poor side of town. Their rivals, Socs or Socials, were the “West-side rich kids.” When Ponyboy got into a brawl that resulted in the murder of a Soc, member, the boys were forced to go into hiding. Later, Ponyboy, Johnny and Dallas along with their Greaser buddies, had to live with the repercussion
The Outsiders, a coming-of-age novel, written by S.E. Hinton who was a teenager at the time of writing is firmly based upon groups of teenagers divided amongst their social classes. The novel takes on the rival battles of the Socials and the Greasers.
The theme of The Outsiders is that everyone can rise above what others expect from them. This is relevant throughout the book when Johnny and Ponyboy save the kids from the burning church, when Randy doesn't want to fight or hate the Greasers anymore, and when Johnny stands up for Cherry and Marcia.
In the book, The Outsiders a character, Johnny Cade starts off by his character traits being afraid, but throughout the novel, Johnny turns into an upstander person who had the courage to conquer a person from the Socs gang because they were threatening him with drowning his good friend, Ponyboy. Johnny’s friendship with Ponyboy was close but in the end, Johnny didn’t necessarily change that much despite his actions but, Ponyboy’s understandings of him improved in a good way.
An ‘outsider’ relates to a person who is ostracised, who does not belong to a particular group and is unaccepted. Director-writer Amy Heckerling portrayed several characters such as Tai and Cher as the outsider in her film in the same way S.E Hinton manifest Ponyboy Curtis and the gang, Greasers as the outcast of her novel ‘The Outsiders’. The Outsiders is a successful exploration and understanding of people who are unlike
The book, and the movie, “the Outsiders” is about a conflict between greasers and socs. Up until the point where Johnny kills a soc, there are mostly only small fights and arguments between the two. The story “the Outsiders” takes place in the 1960’s, when there were two main lifestyles. Greasers and Socs. Greasers are known for greasing their hair. Socs are rich kids who have good clothes, drive mustangs, and always have an argument against the greasers. The main character in S. E. Hinton’s book “the Outsiders” is Ponyboy Curtis. He has two older brothers Darry and Soda. Pony is 14 years old and his best friend, Johnny, is 16 years old. S. E. Hinton wrote “the Outsiders” when she was 17 years old. Her book was published in 1967. The
Life is always full of plight, even if we are reluctant to accept it, things happen. Sometimes it can be hard to work it out alone. We need others to help us when we cannot help ourselves. With others to help, those gray and sad memories will eventually turn into golden, pure moments. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, when several horrific things happened in a flash, Ponyboy needs to be saved from this life of violence and horror, thankfully, a loyal companion, a dog will pull him out of this swirl of chaos.
“Being different doesn’t make you an outsider. It makes you unique and makes you stand out while looking into an unchanged world.” -Ayjee Grogan. Outsiders are people who do not fit in with their crowd. In The Outsiders, each character has conflicts that test who they are, but some are tested more than others when it comes to understanding themselves. Each character in the outsiders are outsiders in their own way. Three outsiders, who grow emotionally throughout the book, are Darry, Cherry, and Ponyboy.
A 1950’s, commonly known novel, ‘The Outsiders’ written by S.E Hinton is based on two rival gangs; the Socs and the Greasers who, throughout the novel understand the importance of belonging. The main concept explored of belonging shows that most young people in society need to feel the urge of belonging for a reason. Through this, Hinton has focused on the Greasers needing to feel a sense of belonging more than the Socials.
Ponyboy tells us that,“when you’re a gang you stick up for members. If you don’t stick up stick together, make like brothers, it isn’t a gang anymore,”(Hinton 26). This is what the greasers do for each other: they stick up for one another and build a supportive community. In the story, The Outsiders, by SE Hinton, the book is about Ponyboy and his gang taking care of each other because there gang is that they fight against the Socs. The characters and actions of this story create a supportive community Kindness and Loyalty.
Both texts, the book and the movie were enjoyable as the main themes were relatable to teenagers, this let us as the viewer connect with the characters stories and personalities. However, both texts could be improved. With ‘The Outsiders,’ the story was very jumpy going from a climax straight down to a period of none action, this lead to some of the characters stories feeling like they weren't finished. Also with ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ some of the characters didn't portray their roles well enough so therefore, the casting choices could have been better which would have lead to a better movie overall.
In the movie “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton I gave the movie a 3 out of 5 star rating. I give the movie a 3 out of 5 because some things that were in the book they changed in the movie. The movie was mainly about Ponyboy and his two brothers and the rest of the Greaser gang. The greasers and another group of people called the Socs were enemies. As a result of them not getting along, it led to many other problems throughout the story. I do not like how they did that because they left very important parts of the story that were in the book. In the book there was more of Ponyboys inner thinking. In the movie there was no inner thinking of Ponyboys. Another thing that was changed in the movie was that Ponyboy was less emotional. In the book they
Comparing two mediums of “The Outsiders” with looking at the advantages and disadvantages a decision can be made by which one is better. There are many differences between the book and movie.
According to a study conducted at Sam Houston State University, nearly 1.5 million youth in the U.S. are gang members. This shows that the book, The Outsiders, written by S. E. Hinton is more relevant to modern society than one may think. The story takes place in the 1960s and is about Ponyboy Curtis, a member of a low class gang of kids from age 14 to around 20 who call themselves the Greasers, and their struggles with the upper class gang who calls themselves the Socs. After Pony's friend, Johnny, kills a Soc in self-defense, the two flee to an abandoned church out of town. They then go out to eat and subsequently return to find they had accidently started a fire in the church that trapped some youthful picnic-goers inside. They then return home for an organized fight they will have with the Socs. Two themes in The Outsiders are that, people do not always act how one would think they do at first, and that all people, regardless of financial state have problems that they have to deal with.
The main character of this book is Ponyboy Curtis, a 14 year old who lives in the East Side. He lost his parents to an automobile accident, and he’s been living with his 2 older brothers. Ponyboy connects to my researched topic because Ponyboy is in a gang called the Greasers, and they’ve been fighting with the Socs for a while. In the book, Ponyboy is jumped by some Socs, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream, ‘Greaser!’ at them, which doesn’t make you feel too
Following Johnny's death in the hospital, the last few chapters of “The Outsiders” have the story winding down to the narrative's rather unexpected conclusion. In what follows below, I will reveal some of my reactions to the key events and dialogue of these chapters and I will provide an overall personal impression of the book as a whole. Finally, I intend to speak to what I see as the deeply altruistic or selfless motivations of the author herself.
