Under the Persimmon Tree written Susanne fisher, Najmah has ultimately 2 losses of four family members in her life shown in the book, but in the end these losses build her to be a stronger person and take back whats hers. There are several characters in this book, including both adults and children, that demonstrate integrity and/or social and political responsibility. These dynamic characters include, Mariatu, Marie, Mohamed, Yabom, Kadi, and Salieu. These characters have a positive change throughout the memoir, The Bite of the Mango, and they learn from their experiences in the civil war to strengthen their character.
Another internal conflict was how she finally found out, in the end, what had happened to her mother. For example:

Ma's character change is an important part of the novel, because while the men in the novel tend to see life in short little spurts, the women see life as a never-ending circle, and they understand life must go on, no matter what. The sudden change in Ma's nature shows early signs of the soon to be womens suffrage.

(BS-2) The bombing affects Najmah in many ways, some ways are good and some ways are bad. (BS-3) Najmah is regaining her hope and her voice. The book that I read for my summer reading assignment was Chu Ju’s House by Gloria Whelan. The theme that I chose to work with for my assignment was: The story demonstrates that conflict occurs when people do not accept or appreciate the unique identities of others. (AGG) Today, many people from the Middle East, go through many life changing experiences, some of these experiences are the loss of family and loved ones, these experiences are shown throughout the book Under The Persimmon Tree. (BS-1) In Under The Persimmon Tree, the character Najmah, starts to go through these experiences, very early in the book. (BS-2) Also in the book, she starts to do many things she normally wouldn’t have done without these experiences happening. (BS-3) At the end of the book, these experiences, cause her to make very big decisions, these decisions are life changing. (TS) The Losses that Najmah goes through, shaped her life in many ways.

Persimmons, by Li-Young Lee, is a poem that discusses many aspects of growing up in a split between two cultures. Lee is presumably the narrator of this poem and describes different aspects of him growing up between the lines of Chinese and American culture. This poem touches on the many ways Lee feels as he is growing up in American Culture and how that affects the Chinese Culture he has at home.
