1. I think that poetry is a theme with in the poems. In “Sonnet 75” Edmund Spenser uses this theme of poetry and wants to “let baser things devise To die in dust, but you shall live by fame: My verse your virtues rare shall eternize” (Spenser 10-11). This develops the theme because she will be eternalized through the poem that he writes. This shows that love like poetry may be internalized as done by Spenser in this poem. The main argument is that any literature will be forever present and live on throughout eternity.
2. The role of women in these poems was to be an object to be romanced by the speaker. In “The Flea” the speaker is trying to champion the woman purely to have a one night stands with her. This is done in a very clever way but ultimately objectifies women. The flea is said to be a “wedding bed and wedding temple” since their mixed blood has become one flesh which in that time was like being more than married. In today’s society the lust for such an action is accepted from both sides but in the renaissance it was almost unheard of for women to engage in such actions of attraction.
3. The study of poetry is mixture of sight and sound but the one that stands out the most is sound. The rhyme pattern of these poems is very apparent when hearing it, the patterns differ between the categories the poem is in. In the blank space before the third stanza we infer that the woman has killed the flea. He is upset at the woman because she killed the flea and wants to know how this flea was guilty. The tone of the poem changes in this stanza because now, he is chastising her for her sins. He is even cool and harsh when he says, “Just so much honor, when thou yield’st to me, /Will waste, as this flea’s death took life from thee” (26-27) He then concludes by explaining that having sex with him would be just as trivial as killing the flea.
John Donne’s poems are similar in their content. They usually point out at same topics like love, lust, sex and religion; only they are dissimilar in the feelings they express. These subjects reflect the different stages of his life: the lust of his youth, the love of his married middle age, and the piety of the latter part of his life. His poem,’ The Flea’ represents the restless feeling of lust during his youthful days but it comes together with a true respect for women through the metaphysical conceit of the flea as a church in the rhythm of the sexual act.

The narrator creates an almost nursery-rhyme like rhythm. In his third stanza however, his last line, cutting short of eight syllables, stands with an emphatic four syllables. Again, in the last stanza, he utilizes the same technique for the last line of the poem. The narrator’s awareness of rhyme and syllable structure provides the perfect bone structure for his poem’s rhythm.

A poem is a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and that often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanza structure. In her poem, “Variations of the Word ‘“love”’,” Margaret Atwood introduces to her audience the word “love” from many different perspectives. Google defines “love” as “an intense feeling of deep affection”, or “having a deep feeling or sexual attachment to (someone).” But “love” is not something that can easily be described. Atwood goes on to present and portray the word through different illustrations, beginning with cliché examples and ending with her own personal scenarios. This theme can be developed throughout a poem through an authors use of form and content. “She Walks in Beauty,” by George Gordon, Lord Byron, is a poem that contains an intriguing form with captivating content. Lord Byron, a nineteenth-century poet, writes this poem through the use of similes and metaphors to describe a beautiful woman. His patterns and rhyme scheme enthrall the reader into the poem. Many times, the first three quatrains introduce the subject and build on one another, showing progression in the poem. The final couplet brings closure to the poem by bringing the main ideas together. On other occasions, the couplet makes a statement of irony or refutes the main idea with a counter statement. It leaves the reader with a last impression of what the author is trying to say.
