1. I think that poetry is a theme with in the poems. In “Sonnet 75” Edmund Spenser uses this theme of poetry and wants to “let baser things devise To die in dust, but you shall live by fame: My verse your virtues rare shall eternize” (Spenser 10-11). This develops the theme because she will be eternalized through the poem that he writes. This shows that love like poetry may be internalized as done by Spenser in this poem. The main argument is that any literature will be forever present and live on throughout eternity.
2. The role of women in these poems was to be an object to be romanced by the speaker. In “The Flea” the speaker is trying to champion the woman purely to have a one night stands with her. This is done in a very clever way but ultimately objectifies women. The flea is said to be a “wedding bed and wedding temple” since their mixed blood has become one flesh which in that time was like being more than married. In today’s society the lust for such an action is accepted from both sides but in the renaissance it was almost unheard of for women to engage in such actions of attraction.
3. The study of poetry is mixture of sight and sound but the one that stands out the most is sound. The rhyme pattern of these poems is very apparent when hearing it, the patterns differ between the categories the poem is in. The poems use a repetition of the sound at the end of each line to achieve this pattern. For example in “sonnet 31” by Sir Philip Sidney the ending rhyme, “How
