The song "Fast" by Luke Bryan was released in 2015 on the album Kill the Lights. This song is important to me because it was the first song that made me like country, made me realize things, and to enjoy life.

On average, 1 person commits suicide every 16.2 minutes(Do Something). The song 1-800 by Logic sets a scene of a boy who goes through life and struggles with being gay, bullied, and suicidal thoughts. Which leads to a call to the 1-800 suicide hotline. The video takes a turn and ends happily with the main actor being married and surrounded by family and friends. The main point that this song displays is that suicide is a real problem and it portrays that through stressing the importance of accepting everyone. My main points in this paper are the content of the video, the sound and pace, how this piece affects today’s society, what modes of persuasion are used.

Robin Thicke’s music video to his song “Blurred Lines” avidly contributes to the patriarchy, while portraying sexism, gender standards, and beauty standards. His music video can be analyzed from a feminist theory approach, as it’s evident that his song and video contribute to a patriarchal society and its inherently sexist and sexualized ideologies. The ideology behind the song and music video is purely sexual and about male dominance. The lyrics to the song and actions in the video exhibit extreme over sexualization and objectification of the women. Analyzing this piece of popular culture through a feminist approach opens up a provoking conversation about how popular culture functions in a patriarchal culture. Analyzing pop culture though a feminist theory can allow for a larger variety and more in-depth analysis about the social aspects and political agenda within popular culture.

I have chosen a song that I would say is a country song. It is actually a song that I have known for many years and that I actually taken ato. This song would be “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown. In this song, Brown sings about things such as enjoying his evenings with family and getting to dine on his favorite meals, being raised in the South, and giving thanks to God and the people who fought for the freedom of our nation. Chum by Earl Sweatshirt is hands down one of the best rap/hiphop songs ever made. Earl made this song just after he got back from samoa which was around 2012. He was sent to Coral Reef Academy by his mother. Coral Reef is a therapeutic retreat for at risk boys. His mother sent him there because it was evident in his music that he was going through some serious psychological issues.

In this song, J Cole shows disappointment and madness to all of popular Atlanta “mumble” rappers. He thinks these rappers songs are meaningless because they literally just repeat several words in the whole songs. J Cole also warns these rappers that they can’t always just make some fake stories in the lyrics to please listeners. Even worse, all of the fake stories made by these rapper are encouraging drugs and violence to audiences and it generates negative impression for the Hip-hop music. On the opposite, old school rappers and J Cole himself consider him following the true spirit of Hip-pop music.

In my opinion, Kendrick Lamar, an award-winning rapper and songwriter, has one of the best abilities to describe his distressed and abused lifestyle in Compton, California. He is not your original cliché artist who does not speak about anything meaningful. Kendrick, also known as K. Dot, is one of the most well known and most respected rappers in this era. Not only does he speak about his gloomy past, but he also speaks about his fortunate future. His ability to give detailed representations of his struggles and his story telling allows me to, metaphorically, enter the mind of Kendrick Lamar.

The song New Slaves written and sung by Kanye West which made a lot of controversial talk in the public which the song was reflecting on times of Jim Crow where whites and blacks had everything they did was on separate sides. The song New Slaves which refers to the 50’s and 60’s time of an era of segregation where during that time there were “separate water fountains for white people and African-Americans” (Birchmeier). The lyrics “my momma was raised in the era when Clean water was only served to the fairer skin” (Kanye West) meant that where white and black people had to drink from separate water fountains.

Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. Lady GaGa’s song ‘Born this Way’ informs others about self-acceptance in her new album ‘Born this way’. This song is about people abusing others and reflecting badly on them self because of their race, gender and choice in who they marry. Lady GaGa expresses her thoughts about people’s issues to say it doesn’t matter who you are because you were born that way.
