Death tolls increase like an escalator going up as the flood gets worse. Bodies form twisted positions as they whip with the current of the water. The nature of this disaster makes people do things that they wouldn’t normally do. Well, you can say some people that is. In the story “Bounty” by Diane Cook, the remaining people alive in the catastrophic, potential life-ending flood are faced with challenges of survival. The main character, his neighbor and Gary all show some compassion during the hard times. Disasters happen everyday as much as we might not think about it or believe it. During one occurrence, he walks to his door when he hears a knock. The beggar wearing a suit that “was in ruins, the arms shredded like party streamers from the shoulders. Sea salt ghosted his face. Some sand, or maybe a barnacle clung to his neck.” (Cook, 1) asks for food and water then lunges at the main character in attempt to strangle him. Later, the protagonist says, “I miss the old days when though they happened to be begging, they were gentleman who understood that hard work was their ticket to success.” (Cook, 2). The protagonist does show some signs of compassion though. I can understand that people may look at this guy and think he’s cold hearted for deciding not to help the outside people. If he helps one person outside, that one person is going to tell another where he got some food and before you know it, a herd of people would bombard him and then he wouldn’t have anything. Put this into perspective, if the flood wasn’t happening and it was back to the old days as he calls it, if had strangers, homeless people coming up to your house asking for your food, maybe a place to stay, what would you say? Maybe you’ll agree to give him some food and then he leaves. Although, what would you do then if multiple people then started coming to your house? What if you let them in and they stole everything?
