The story of Safaricom is the story of the triumph of hampered liberalization of the telecommunication services division in Kenya; the endurance of grit management; and the development of innovation over national monopoly and even unfettered liberalization. In fact, it is a microcosm of the larger Kenyan story of government-enabled macroeconomic achievement amidst daunting international economic recession and inborn national and cultural negative heritages. In spite of these, Safaricom remains the largest corporate taxpayer in Kenya and features prominently in the country’s national economic planning and budget projections as the Country strives towards middle income status by 2030. The diversification of Safaricom’s portfolio of services and corporate redirection has expanded the competition framework and spaces within which the company formerly operated. The recent market upheaval in Kenya provides enough bases for a comprehensive competition review.
Safaricom is therefore a great company to study. Its influence on the Kenyan financial standing cannot be ignored, its boundless innovativeness as well as the fact that Safaricom has now become a company that international investors strongly associate with Kenya. On this paper I have outlined Safaricom’s history as well as Kenya’s history and the codependent relationship their success stories share. Also included are Safaricom products and services as well as the company’s marketing strategy. I have also examined how
