In the book The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi, I think that the theme is it’s okay to take a risk. There are many times in this book where risks are taken. If there were no risks taken the story would be boring. Charlotte, the main character, was expecting two other families, but they could not make it. Charlotte obviously dislikes having to be the only girl on the ship. For example, on page 17 in the text, it states, “ But . . . but that would be all men, Mr. Grummage! And . . . I am a girl. It would be wrong!” This shows that Charlotte really doesn't want to be the only girl on the ship which makes her not want to go on the ship. Then she decides that she needs to take a risk. I know this because in the text on page 18 it states, “ With Mr. Grummage leading the way I stepped finally, hesitantly, …show more content…

Along with that, she took a risk when she tried to stop Zechariah's punishment. It says on page 120 “ weeping, gripping the whip handle hard. ‘ You mustn't,’ I kept saying. ‘ You musn’t’!” ‘Give me that!’” This shows she took a risk because she talked back to the Captain even though she knew she would get in trouble. Also, she took the whip from Mr. Hollybrass so Zachariah didn’t get hurt. Finally, a time when Charlotte took a risk was in chapter 20 page 230, “‘Is there anyone who goes into his cabin now?’ I asked ‘I don’t know,’ Zachariah said. ‘But you could go.” this shows that Charlotte is going to take a risk because she knows the captain doesn't want her in his cabin anymore but she is going to take a risk and goes in to his cabin to take the key so he can’t go into his safe with all the
