The book ‘Through It All’ is a novel written by a Caribbean author named Giselle Mills. The book is based on the life of a Caribbean family. The family resides in the Caribbean island of Nevis. The characters in the book face various situations and events that leave major impacts on their lives. The novel has a main plot and a sub-plot that are both linked to the family. The main plot is that of the protagonist of the novel, Andreide D’Averette. Andreide is a sixteen year old girl who goes to a public school and is the daughter of Rose Marie D’ Averette, a psychiatrist and Charles D’Averette a landscaper. She also has two brothers; seventeen year ten year old Omarion and old Marques. The sub-plot however, was that of Andreide’s mother Rose Marie. Rose Marie was the matriarch of her family and a successful psychiatrist and an establishing author. It highlighted Rose Marie’s trials and tribulations as a successful working woman, mother and wife. The novel also highlighted various occurrences that linked their similarities to the past and the present times or modern era. These occurrences include but are not limited to the judgement of socio-economic status, race and racism and gender margins.
