Tianjin Eco-city, which started in 2008/2009 is an ambitious project brought about by cooperation between China and Singapore, aiming for a responds to challenges the urban development has caused. Its aim is to be an example for the future improvement of the metropolis creation and performance; Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made an statement for a “A thriving city which is socially harmonious, environmentally-friendly and resource-efficient – a model for sustainable development”.
The Eco-City project is estimated to be concluded in 10-15 years, and it is run by SSTEC1, which is the responsible of buying the land to the Chinese government and developing the city on it; by 2014 the overall infrastructure investment has been around CNY 40 billion.
The project’s purposes are captured by the Three Harmonies and Three Abilities philosophy; mainly social, economic and environmental sustainability as well as commercial viability, replicability and being scalable. It can be seen that through the three harmonies the project is fixing its objectives, but that they are not thinking about them as particular “experiment”; the desire to be an example for future designs is quite patent in the Abilities part, making clear that it would not be enough to be successful in this singular project.
