In 2 Timothy 4:1-4 Paul charges Timothy along with Christians of today with “God and the Lord Jesus Christ” as his witnesses to, “Preach the Word!” This exhortation does not come without merit, Paul gives his reasons in verse three and four why it is important. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” NASB reads, “But wanting to have their ears tickled” and this is exactly what is going on in the churches of Christ of today before they totally fall away to false doctrine. They want to please their own desires and instead of glorifying God they glorify themselves.
In “Current Issues Facing the Church” notes, Robert Stapleton wrote a list of the things plaguing the churches and they all have to do with what man wants and not what the Lord wants. “When it comes to worship of the church the sovereignty of God has been displaced by the sovereignty of the consumer, what we have ended up with is worship that is ‘user friendly.’ In other words, whatever pleases man is the rule.” The list reads this way not numbered in order of importance, “1.
