There are many classic novels that many people will argue should be read by everyone. One of those books include the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which is considered a definite classic. While To Kill A Mockingbird may be considered an outstanding book, people are divided over the idea that the book should be taught in schools. Some people believe that the book should be taught in schools because of the morals taught through Atticus’ teachings and the significance of the story. However, others think the novel should not be taught in schools, since students may not be mature enough to fully understand the topic of racism throughout the book. However, the book To Kill A Mockingbird should be taught in schools, because the novel teaches good morals, and reveals an important part of American history. To Kill A Mockingbird should be taught in schools since the book teaches students good lessons. In an article from Huffington Post called, “High School English Teachers On Why Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ Endures,” says To Kill A Mockingbird “‘is a book that helps us grow and move towards becoming a more understanding and tolerant society, which is ultimately what we would all like to have happen’” (Crum). High school English teachers continue to teach To Kill A Mockingbird because they believe that the novel conveys good morals to students. For instance, in the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus explains to Scout, “‘You never really understand a person
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been challenged/banned countless times since it’s original publication in 1960. The reasoning people could have behind banning it is that they feel that the racism, language and subject matter in the book is offensive, inappropriate, immoral and that it encourages and condones such things. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Maycomb, a small town in Alabama, during the depression from 1935-1937, and is told from the perspective of a little girl named Scout. In the book Scout’s father Atticus teaches her and her brother Jem many valuable lessons. The things Atticus teaches Scout and Jem are things we all need to know. To Kill a Mockingbird is an inspirational book that teaches valuable moral values,
Currently in many schools across the country students are reading To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. Most teachers believe they are anti racism while also reading a classic. This is not necessarily true. The book has many racial undertones that most don’t bring up. This can lead to students blindly reading and acting like the book is the gospel. It’s trying to teach kids how to be anti racist and when authority figures tell you how to act you usually listen. This book tells you this is the right way to be a ally and you will be praised by all of the poor people who need your help. Because of this To Kill a Mockingbird
The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee should be read and taught in school considering the facts that it teaches the important message of learning to stand in other’s shoes, and that the reader can see the wide range of diversity such as socioeconomic status and race. In the real world, we will come across many different people with different backgrounds and views. It is easy to look at those people and think, “they are strange,” or “they don’t understand anything.” I admit, before reading this book I was insensitive to this and didn’t even realize when I looked at people and made those assumptions. This book has helped me be not so judgmental and be able to see from other people’s point of view. While some may say this book shouldn’t be taught because it is “racist” or
Lee implies that people learn lessons through life experiences that school can ever teach. Throughout this novel, Atticus taught his kids many lessons that was hard for them to hear at times, but it later on helped them in the story. Or it helped them grow up and mature. On page 40 of To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus was explaining to Scout that Miss.Caroline was new and didn’t know anyone, and she especially didn’t know the Cunningham’s story, Atticus states, “Atticus said… but if Walter and I had put ourselves in her shoes we’d have seen it was an honest mistake on her part” (40). This quote by Atticus is meant to explain to Scout that Miss. Caroline just made an honest human mistake. He tried to get Scout to realize that if he put herself in Miss.Caroline’s shoes then she might better understand the confusion. Obviously you can’t really be in her shoes, but he said it figuratively to show her why it was important to give her another chance, or at least try to be nice and listen. Atticus taught this to Scout at home later on that night. At her school after that she tried to just get by in her class. Lee also shows mainly throughout that the school system doesn’t help when it comes to teaching children life lessons. As shown in the earlier quote Atticus, had told Scout to jump in Walter’s shoes, and walk around in it. This other quote shows how Scout actually takes into consideration of Atticus’ words, and chooses to not bother Jem because she tried to imagine what it had
Growing up is a maze with many twists and turns. In Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Jean Louise "Scout" Finch experiences many difficult situations as part of her coming of age. As Scout grows up in the rural Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression, she faces problems with self-identity, racism, and her community. Harper Lee writes in a subtle yet impactful way about how Scout goes through this confusing stage, making her book a classic that every student should read. Recently To Kill a Mockingbird has been a controversial topic because a “school district in Mississippi announced that it was pulling the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic from its 8th-grade reading list” (Oprea 1). The school district worried that the book was uncomfortable for kids because of its use of explicit language. The school board stated that other books can convey the same lessons in more age-appropriate ways. The question is can these books convey the same lessons without using the language so vital in communicating the historical context of the novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is an important book that should not be banned in schools because it
To Kill a Mockingbird was once a book “every adult should read before they die.” The book is a classic, and a great example of American literature. However, many have complained about the book, too. I’ve read it and I personally think that it’s great book. I totally disagree on banning the book. Although I do think that there should be some sort of label on the book warning people about what’s in the content.
In this essay I will be describing and telling you whether or not To Kill A Mockingbird should or shouldn't be taught in the 9th grade. To Kill A Mockingbird is a very good and intellectual book to read. It is a winner of the pulitzer prize and a wonderful book it talks about this family(Atticus, Scout, and Jem) back in the day when black people didn't have many right and privileges. They live in a little town called birmingham Alabama, the kids father is a lawyer and is defending a black guy(Tom Robinson) that got accused of Rape. The reason for the father (Atticus)defending this man is because he knows that Tom Robinson didn’t rape this girl. Overall this book shows how you should act toward someone if you know they are not guilty even if they are black(Everyone Is Equal). So in my opinion this book should be taught in the 9th grade because it shows how white people acted toward blacks back in the day.
This book is very true to life even today. We all go about our day with our own preconceived notions on life. The saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is very true when it comes to this book. Many people feel that it has no use for us in today’s society. They feel that due to the racist language it should be banned. An example seen here in an Interview by Mary Dempsey and Muriel Saunders, “"To Kill a Mockingbird," written in 1960 by Harper Lee. High school administrators in Muskogee, Oklahoma, removed that same book from the school's required reading list for freshman because, they say, the novel includes racially derogatory language that could offend African-Americans.” (Dempsey, Saunders). Society wants to hide the fact that the past
The book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee in 1960, shows a lot of racism, it shows a lot of examples of the moral and there is a lot of irony that is shown. The moral of To Kill a Mockingbird(TKAM) is shown all throughout the book. The characters are talking about it from the beginning of the book all the way to the end of the book on why some people and things haven’t done anything to you but yet people still have a problem with them. Jeremy (Jem) Finch and his sister Scout Finch are the children of Atticus Finch, a hard working and caring lawyer. In the book the kids get told a moral by Atticus that it is a sin to Kill a Mockingbird. Later in the book the kids realize that he is right and it involves signs of karma, racism and they realize that there society is not perfect because of what the moral means.
The novel To Kill A Mockingbird shows people what it is like to be a good person who cares for others, and knows the difference between right and wrong. It makes people think about how race is nothing but a color, religion, or even gender and that it should not define them. It also makes people think about how evil can be overcome if you rise above it with their head held high. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a book that shows Jem and Scout growing up and becoming tolerable, empathetic, and courageous
To Kill a Mockingbird should continue being a book taught in school because it teaches you to never attack the innocent. An example would be when Bob Ewell tried to kill Scout and Jem but Boo Radley stabbed Bob Ewell with a kitchen knife before he could do anything to the kids. “Bob Ewell’s lyin’ on the ground under that tree down yonder with a kitchen knife stuck in his ribs, he’s dead Mr. Finch” (Page 357). That quote was from Heck Tate the county sheriff, This quote helps my claim because it shows what
The book to kill a mockingbird is a Great book and movie for kids and family and has great lesson for parents to discuss with their kids. However many claim that that atticus was a racist but he still was pushing equality and that was in the second by Harper lee. Author Margot Stern Strom says “ There are topics here for families to discuss that are as timely today as they were fifty years ago.”This quote means that the context of the book mean that is still relevant to today's. All in all to kill a mockingbird can help out teach kids what the past was like back then.
To Kill A Mockingbird is a strengthening book that is instructed in classrooms today. It demonstrates how powerful the somber book can be to teach teens about society. The reason To Kill A Mockingbird is still taught today is because of its importance and clarity it give on judgement, tolerance, and acceptance. The book may leave different impressions, but things worthy to be taught and spread always has discussion.
The novel continues to be taught in classrooms due to its depiction of themes about race, morality, and innocence. While the novel depicts a discrimination against race, To Kill a Mockingbird also depicts a discrimination against gender and
