Title In the poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” written by Anne Bradstreet, the authors’ purpose of writing is to emphasize the love and affection she has for her husband. The author composes six rhyming couplets in a simple 12-line poem that conveys her devotion to her spouse. Anne wrote this poem in the first-person point of view as she uses the word, “I.” This piece of literature was published in the year 1678. Bradstreet has achieved the purpose of communicating her feelings throughout the poem using the literary elements of themes in her role of the women and conjugal love through imagery, language, and metaphors. To appreciate Anne Bradstreet’s letters and poetry, it is important to address the background, time, place, and gender of this author. Anne Bradstreet broke barriers and became, “…the most prominent of early English poets of North America and first writer in England’s North American colonies…” (Wikipedia) Her family was in a better position than most of the Puritans in that time. Her father, Christian and wealthy Puritan Leader Thomas Dudley, assured: “…that she received an education superior to that of most young women of the time.” (Norton 110) She wrote many poems in forms of letters about her husband, children and grandchildren which portrayed her as a Puritan woman.
