Abstract: This paper presents a detailed Finite Element Analysis study of the formation and evolution of the buckle & wrinkle pattern that form in large, ultra-lightweight (minimal mass to achieve high acceleration), flat thin inflatable membrane structures (use as novel reflectors in space-based telescopes) under the various load conditions, thickness, variation of element size and α (l/b) . The analysis was carried on different types of shapes (square, rectangle and triangle) with assuming imperfections in the structure with the ABAQUS finite element package. Wrinkling patterns are presented to show how buckle & wrinkle formation with increasing tension loads, membrane thickness and number of elements.
