Should Colleges Athletes Get Paid?
How would you feel if you worked really hard at your job and always gave your best effort but your bosses were the ones getting paid for it? I assume you would not be too happy. That’s how college athletes feel. They put so much time and effort into their sport. Although they are receiving scholarships, they are not getting any extra spending money. No college student nor athlete should have to worry about how they are going to pay for everyday essentials. They control your schedule because you have to attend each practice or any team activity. College sports also has a dramatic affect on your health mentally and physically. “Time demands are a frequent source of stress for student-athletes. Many student-athletes spend 30 hours per week on their sport, with extensive in season travel and early morning practices that limits sleep” ( Rpowell). Balancing everything in your life is stressful enough, think about adding a competitive sport. “Managing both sports and academics demand often results in elevated stress, inadequate sleep, and an inability to participate in other extracurricular activities that help promote overall well being” ( Rpowell). Athletes do receive scholarships to play for that college therefore there is a lot of pressure to do good. Athletes do not want to disappoint their coach after being recruited, so they must show up to everything and give their best effort. “Pressure to perform well is another stress factor. When coaches use an ego/performance centered motivational climate, student-athletes tend to experience greater anxiety and distress, and are at elevated risk of negative outcomes including burnout and disordered eating” ( Rpowell). However, their scholarships do not include an everyday spending allowance to provide for their everyday needs therefore, an extra spending allowance should be provided. The opposite viewpoint is that they are getting their education paid for so why do they deserve extra pay? Isn't that enough? A factor as to why athletes choose to play college sports is to get their education paid for so they do not go into debt. Athletes should have to find a way to provide for themselves just like every other college student. Even non-athletes struggle with making money but the school isn't paying them. When going through the recruiting process and signing a letter of intent with their chosen college, they were making a commitment and knew what they were getting themselves into. There should not be any extra pay for something they knew would be hard but agreed to it. However the scholarships don't cover everything. Most cover living and some food expenses but the everyday necessities of a college student are not provided. “On a day off, that meal might not be provided” ( Infante). As shown meals are provided but if there is an off day or the Universities dining hall is not open then they would not receive a free meal that time.
