There as been equality in professional sports for a long time. The men are getting paid way more than the women athletes. Some would say that the men should be paid more because watching men is exciting, and women’s sports aren’t fun to watch. Also, because in some sports the men generate more attendance or revenue. Women have started to generate a bigger audience and more revenue in some sports. Women are doing the same thing as men. They work just as hard and maybe harder because they are trying to prove a point to everyone. Women should be paid the same as the men in professional sports. The Women’s U.S. Soccer Team made less than the Men’s U.S. Soccer Team but no one knows why because the women’s team is doing better than the men’s. In 2016, the Women’s U.S. Team filed a complaint to the U.S. Soccer for wage discrimination. They alleged that …show more content…
Also, in U.S. professional soccer league women make less than the men. In the NWSL has a salary cap of $265,000 while the salary cap for the men is $3 million. Alex Morgan is the highest paid American soccer player. She makes about $450,000. Morgan also takes home around $1 million in endorsements (Close). Even though Morgan makes a lot of money, she still makes way less than Landon Donovan, who earned $2 million just from being on the team, let alone the famous soccer players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. They make tens of millions of dollars each year (Close). The Women’s U.S. Soccer Team should be paid equal to the men’s team because they won the world cup in 2015. They made $2 million from the organization for winning the World Cup. Although, that is a lot of money the German
An Additional barrier that women could face at this level could be an economic one, as the players at this level will need to be fully equipped with all of the basic equipment as well as travelling costs and coaching. This is a barrier because women do not get paid as much as men in football therefore they may have to acquire
The United States National Women’s soccer team is one of the utmost underappreciated teams in society; considering, they have won three World Cups; seven CONCACAF Gold Cup wins; four Olympic gold medals; along with ten Algarve Cups. On average, individuals on the women’s team make $37,800, while the men make $300,000. Some might deem this is ironic considering that the men’s team loses money each year, but are still paid considerably more than the women. This quote from former U.S. National Soccer Player, Abby Wambach, elucidates what her opinion is on this topic, she says, “The women’s national team made in the twenties of millions of dollars and we’re still paid less than the men’s team- and the men’s team lost $2 million. That’s kind of
The pay in both the professional women's soccer team and the professional men's soccer team is very unequal. The players on the women's team get paid nearly a fourth less which is very surprising considering how good they are. Both teams play the same game do the same sport and represent the same team so why aren't they payed the same? I believe the women's team should be paid the same as the men's or even more because of their amazing results.
The US women’s soccer team are only paid about a fourth of what the men are paid, even though they actually preform at a level well above that of the men’s, and create more income for the corporation; In fact, the women’s soccer team made approximately $20 million more money in revenue than the men’s soccer team ("U.S. Women's Team Files Wage-discrimination Action vs. U.S. Soccer"). Another instance of the men’s team earning more money than the women’s team unfairly is that the women were only paid $2 million dollars total when they won the world cup in 2015, while the men’s team (who got to round 16 before they lost) were paid a total of $9 million dollars ("U.S. Women's Team Files Wage-discrimination Action vs. U.S. Soccer"). That means that the women’s team was paid approximately 22% of what the men’s team was being paid, creating a wage gap that is even larger than what the one from the 1960’s. If you go by the logic of paying someone based on the worker’s effort and skill, as it is stated in the Equal Pay Act, than the women’s team should be paid significantly more than the men’s team, not the other way
If women are being payed less because the length of their matches and or games, that would mean men are being paid more because they play longer. If this is the case then baseball players would receive more money for matches that extend to extra innings and football players and hockey players would get paid extra for games that go into overtime. Then NBA players would expect to receive extra pay for playoff series that go into overtime. Receiving extra money for things like that is ludacris. Athletes are paid for winning, not for how long it takes them to win.
One of the main barriers that is preventing the women's sports pay gap from decreasing is the viewer count, or the amount of active viewers that the sport draws in. The more attention and views a sport gets, the more companies will reach out and offer sponsorship opportunities to the players. An example of this is the 2011 FIFA women's World Cup where the United States women's team placed second in the event, the event brought in a total of nearly 250 million active viewers. In the 2010 men's cup the United States men's team didn't even place top 4, the active viewer count for this event was 2.2 billion active viewers leading to them bringing in 3.7 billion dollars in revenue and the women's teams only bringing in 73 million dollars in revenue.
the gender pay gap is always showing inequality..The women on the U.S. national soccer team don’t get paid as much as the men, so they have filed a complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission . The numbers in the complaint are stark, showing that the women earned less than the men’s national team despite far better performance. Team member Becky Sauerbrunn said, “U.S. Soccer has no justification for paying us as little as they do.” There actually is an economic justification for the women's soccer pay disparity. This is saying, that women are being paied less or what men do worse when they do better. This means that women are not being payed as much as men as you would think… there mad and i would be to if i was doing
“Equal play. Equal pay.” –U.S. Women’s National Team (Reiher). The gender pay gap is surprisingly still a large problem today. Not only in soccer, but in every sport women exert the most effort, yet they do not receive the credit. The U.S. Woman’s National Team should receive an equal amount of pay as the men’s team because they have won more titles, they are better soccer players, and they bring in more income.
Many women professional basketball players work hard, are dedicated, and have a genuine love for the game; however, many of them are very underpaid when compared to the men professional basketball players. The difference between what men and women are paid for the same job is referred to as the gender wage gap. In the United States that gap is 78 cents, so a woman is paid 78 cents for every dollar paid to a man doing the same work. Lynx player Maya Moore said, "We’re not super rich like the guys … but money’s not everything when you’re talking about dynasties and legacies, and inspiring young women and men, and opening people’s minds." Obviously, they do not play for the money, they play because they love the game of basketball. The women basketball players work really hard and inspire more people everyday. They should be awarded and paid the equal amount just as any male basketball player.
Lopiano complains that there’s too much of a salaries gap between man and women playing the same sports. “The right to play has been established. However, the issue that has been confronted is the barrier to being treated equally when it comes to money” (Lopiano 1). Most people will say women’s tennis matches are more exciting than men’s matches; men’s victory purses are still considerably higher than women’s victory purses. Top women tennis players earned 59 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. The average total purse was $63,031,000.00 for top men players and $41,000,000.00 for top women players (Daniel Frankl 2). In soccer, the Women’s World Cup soccer team was promised $12,500 if they won compared to the $300,000 male players were to receive. The payout for women players was increased to $50,000 because fans protested the unfair payout gap between the male and female players (Lopiano 1); it’s still 1/6 the payout
Women Soccer Players Should be Paid More In the year 2015, the Women’s United States national team won the World Cup. When they won they earned a $2 million. Even though this was a great accomplishment, in the 2014 Men’s World Cup, Germany won and earned a whopping $35 million. This is a major pay gap between the men and women’s soccer teams. I believe that women soccer players should be paid as much or more than their male counterparts.
One may argue that women do no not play as much as men in matches, therefore they shouldn’t be earning as much. For example, women in professional tennis generally play less than their male counterparts; this is especially true in the Grand Slams because women only have to play best two out of three sets to win a match whereas the men have to play best three out of five sets in order to progress
The sport industry is a tremendous moneymaking business worldwide. As of today, it’s still an issue when it comes to equal pay between men and women within any company. When it comes to sports, it can be a little tricky. It’s true that men receives a better pay when it comes to playing sports, but the reason for that is that many people tend to watch men athletes as oppose to women athletes. When it comes to the financial situations, the organization needs to view the spending within the team, so that the organization is spending its profits wisely. If men athletes have more viewers, there will be more money coming into the budget, which would allow the organization to distribute money on certain things. Men athletes vs. women athletes pay
Recently, five players of the USWNT team filed a federal complaint to the United States Soccer Federation for wage discrimination. The women and men’s team both play the same amount yet the men earn more. The USWNT team has had more success on the field than the men's team, winning back-to-back World Cup Championships and obtaining gold medals in the past four Olympics (Brown). The USMNT has only reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup once in the last fifty years (Brown). According to NBC News, the USWNT get paid between $3,600- $4,950 per game, while the USMNT gets paid $6,250- $17,625 (Kassouf). Last year the USWNT made $20 million more in revenue than the USMNT. Another shocking statistic is for a woman to make the World Cup roster,
Twenty years ago the United States started their first men’s soccer league. The Major League Soccer (MLS) started out in 1996 with 10 teams and has continued to grow the sport of soccer and the league currently has 20 teams. On the other hand, women’s soccer started a league after the U.S. women’s national team won the World Cup in 1996, but they failed to bring in revenue for the federation. The women are now on their third league and are starting to bring in the same sales as the men. Currently, when it comes to the national teams, the women are bringing in money for the federation while the men are losing the federation money, because they are not winning as many games as
