Analysis of Cultural Flaw in Chronicle of a Death Foretold
Humanity has built grand and wondrous cultures and societies, for the better of mankind people have devoted themselves to a functional structured society. But have these creations become merely fabrications that hinder one’s true beliefs? Throughout the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, author Gabriel Garcia Marquez gives insight into Colombian society. As the story of a murder unravels Marquez projects the themes of honor and fate cautiously, using the town's hesitation to prevent Santiago's murder despite "foretold" warnings to portray how they flaw Columbian culture. Despite this immense pressure the twins at one point actually do try to find “just the right person to stop the crime without bringing any shame upon them.” (102) The twins may come off as determined and cold blooded but Marquez makes his readers aware that behind the front of ruthlessness and machismo these two know just as well as anyone that this murder is not about Santiago, or their personal vendetta, but in fear of judgment.
Honor may have hindered the characters to stop the murder but even after the murder another theme seems to torture the characters. Fate plays a large role as a theme within Chronicle of a Death Foretold as Marquez toys with the idea of destiny and the plot is tossed between random occurrence and the idea of inescapable fate. Marquez seems to infect the whole town with distress and confusion as they try to understand how such an event could have happened, despite all the forewarning and ways of prevention. The town falls into a “common anxiety [as they try to] give order to the chain of many chance events that made absurdity possible” (96). Marquez creates for his readers a situation where the whole town knew that the twins were going to murder Santiago, making it so widely known, in fact, that the people thought it impossible not to be prevented. In Gabriel Garcia-Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death Foretold, the concept of appearance versus reality is manifested in three of the major characters around whom the novel revolves. The surface impressions of Santiago Nasar, Angela Vicario, and Bayardo San Roman are deeply rooted in Latin culture; underneath the layer of tradition, however, lies a host of paradoxical traits which indicate the true complexity of human nature.
After Santiago is murdered and his body is autopsied, it is revealed “seven of the many wounds were fatal” and some of his organs were “destroyed”. Moreover, when Pedro plans to fatally stab Santiago, he looks for his heart “almost in his armpit, where pigs have it”. Thus by likening Santiago to a pig, Gabriel Marquez emphasizes the significance of the pig knives as a symbol. The use of the pig knives as a murder weapon is also symbolic of the crassness of the decision to murder Santiago. The novel states that the Vicario brothers had less than a day to plan the execution of Santiago, since the were told of their sister’s loss of virginity “a short time before three” on the morning they killed Santiago Nassar. Throughout the novel, many characters demonstrate the pressure honor holds as a value in the town’s culture by failing to inform Santiago Nasar of Pedro and Pablo Vicario’s plan. This shows their idea that honor must be sustained within a family. It is true that there are the few towns people, like Clotilide Armenta, who try to directly warn Santiago, but most fail to involve themselves in any way. In the case of Santiago's fiancée, instead of warning her soon to be husband, she only thinks about herself and her own honor; “she went through a crisis of humiliation” (133), ashamed, thinking that Santiago must marry Angela to uphold Angela’s and the Vicario family’s honor because he had taken her virginity. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Marquez employs the motif of flowers within the novel to illustrate the role of women within a Latin American society; the cultural and symbolic implications of this associate flowers with purity, victimization, gender barriers, and deceit. In doing so, Marquez creates a microcosm of Latin America, exposing the core of Columbian culture and society with all its aspects such as ethnicity, and social norms and conventions that led to a series of insecurities and poverty in the community, and its affect on the role of women. Marquez believes that even if you know your fate, you can not change the outcome. Marquez shows that people cannot alter their fate through the plight of the characters Santiago Nasar, Angela Vicario and the twin brothers.
In Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, honor is a very prominent theme in the town and its culture. The need for honor influences many actions taken by individuals and traditions that characters strictly follow. As the narrator’s mother states, honor is love. The reader sees this statement supported throughout the story through beliefs and actions of the Vicario twins, Angela’s mother, and the townspeople as a whole. Honor is such a guiding force in the small community that it almost replaces what love should be. Pura Vicario, Angela’s mother, for example, values honor more than she values true family cherishing and love. Angela’s twin brothers have high respect for their own family honor, and they strive to uphold it by showing their love for their sister in hunting Santiago to retrieve her honor. The townspeople display their devotion to honor as they do not attempt to stop Santiago Nasar’s death. The qualified statement honor is love applies to the novel in actions by the twins, Angela’s mother, and the townspeople, and how their desperation to defend honor controls them.
People in the small town are eager to know if the couple has properly complete their marriage, by doing this it is not only displaying blood on a bed sheet it is displaying honor, which the Vicario family do not have due to Angela. In order to restore the family honor the twins must kill Santiago. The narrators states “The lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith, and the twins declared at the end of the trial that they would have done it again a thousand times over for the same reason” (Marquez 48). The narrator shows in Chronicle of a Death Foretold the type of violence is murder for honor. Even through the twins slaughtered Santiago like a pig, the murder was not completely their fault. The boys purposely announced the murder to the town people to have someone try to stop them from committing the murder. Pedro and Pablo did not feel it is right killing their friend, but they did not have any other options besides killing him to restore honor. The author’s choice in doing so is important simply because the novella is based on a real life story which occurred in Sucre, Colombia, in 1951, where he had lived. The incident happened while Gabriel Garcia Marquez was in college studying journalism, just like the narrator of the novel. Religion is a dominant force in culture, social standings, and human interaction. Though narrated in a religious society that is centered around Catholicism, the Chronicle of a Death Foretold is about an affluent young man named Santiago Nasar, who is murdered by twin brothers, Pablo and Pedro Vicario. As evident as the community prepares for the bishop’s arrival, religion is intertwined in their culture. So, with the potency of a religious head figure, civilians alter their daily lives to follow a religious protocol in the beginning of the book. Because religion is foundational in the book’s societal structure, it shapes aspects of gender, sexual engagements, and character interaction, it provides assistance to understanding the complexity of a character’s development and actions.
In Gabriel García Márquez’s novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Santiago Nasar is ruthlessly murdered by the Vicario brothers-Pedro and Pablo Vicario-in a remote Colombian town.
