In our modern day world we are in constant communication with each other through texting, and social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. One’s private and personal life can suddenly be public to the whole world and their whole community. Social media has changed the way people interact with one another, changed our perception of the term “friend”, and has changed how we present ourselves to our community. Social media sites such as Facebook allows the user to create any image of themselves to display to the public. One can do this through profile pictures, who they are “friends” with, what their interests are, and what relationships they have. The data from my survey displays that 45.92 percent of survey takers agree that creating a “cool” image for themselves online is important to them. 59 percent of survey takes also agree that they sue social media sites as a way to promote themselves positively to others. I find these numbers shockingly high, that so many teens admit to making their online image a certain way so that they can look “cool” to their fellow peers. We have become a society that is so dependent on how people think of one another that we must create a “perfect” image of oneself on a social media site to obtain the status of “popular” or “cool”. After collecting and analysing my data from the survey, my opinion does not change. I still agree that Social media is changing our social environment negatively. The data collected from my survey only proves that this is true. Adolescences today are loosing the important of face-to- face interaction, and are so focused on creating the perfect image of themselves, even though it might not truly be who they are offline. If I were to study this topic further, I would focus more on the topic of self-promotion rather than overall
