In both Judaism and Christianity, the Sabbath is a religious day of worship. Jewish people celebrate it on a Saturday and Christians celebrate it on a Sunday. It is a day of rest and worship. Christians celebrate it on a Sunday because that Is the day of the resurrection (Easter Sunday). Jesus was Jewish. He was a good Jew. Jesus worshiped in the synagogue on the Sabbath, but he used to come into conflict with the Pharisees, Jewish religious leaders, over many religious laws and customs. He told them that he thought they were using the laws to their own power and that they did not explain to the Jewish people the meanings of these laws. The Pharisees saw this, they were not pleased, they said to Jesus that it was against the law of the Sabbath to do that, because it is counted as work, which is not allowed to be done on the Sabbath. Jesus told them that “David did that time when he needed something to eat? He and his men were hungry, so they went in to the house of God and ate the bread offered to God. This happened when Abiathar was High Priest. According to Jewish law only the High Priest may eat this bread-but David ate it and gave it to his men.” Then Jesus told them “The Sabbath was made for the good of human beings; they were not made for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” This shows that Jesus has a better understanding of the true meaning of the Sabbath, that necessary work such as eating must be done and that Jesus has more authority than the Pharisees. In Mark 3:1-6 (man with a paralysed hand). Jesus went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and healed a man with a paralysed hand. Jesus was doing this to help the man. Other people in the synagogue thought that he shouldn’t do this because it was the Sabbath. Jesus did this because the way he interpreted the Jewish laws of the Sabbath differently to other Jews and Pharisees, and according to Jesus healing people was allowed on the Sabbath because it is helping someone.
