Instinct –About A Mere Illusion
One of the two main characters in this movie is Dr. Ethan Powell, an anthropologist. The study of primatology is present in this movie, because Dr. Powell is shown several times living with the mountain gorillas. He gains their trust by adapting to the way they live and interact. I think a little bit of cultural anthropology is also present because although he is studying primates, I believe they have a culture and Dr. Powell has adapted to their nature.
The second important character in this movie is Dr. Theo Caulder, a psychologist. The first sub field of psychology that is present in this movie is cognitive psychology. We are introduced to Dr. Caulder while he is interviewing a patient who is

Powell and other inmates) behave the way they do and and what causes them to act that way, their mental process. Dr. Caulder soon changes the way he interviews Dr. Powell by accommodating him in environments that are closer to him or that he would possibly feel safer in. For example, he takes Dr. Powell to the zoo to see some on the gorillas and then asks the guards to leave because he realizes it was making Dr. Powell feel uncomfortable. Frankincense, making both Dr. Powell's and Dr. Caulder' way of conducting research similar.
I think humans are truly not in control of their own lives. If we were, everyone would be doing whatever they wanted to do and that would be “savage.” Life is a game and sometimes we need to be taught how to play properly by a simple example of humanity. Dr. Powell proclaimed that you would find more violence in the city in one day then you ever would in the the forest and I agree. Humans are the only species that kill each other for reasons other than survival.
I believe that control is merely an illusion that we like to believe we have. In one of Dr. Caulder's sessions with Ethan, the guards are asked to leave and soon Dr. Caulder is held captive by Ethan and is demanded to write down what he has lost. Dr. Caulder answers “control” but Ethan says no and asks a few more times. Finally realizing what Ethan is talking about, Dr. Caulder writes down “illusion.”Ethan then explains how we only have the illusion of having
In the context of intellectual property, control is usually defined by use. That means that
The concept of control is used in everyone’s personal life. Each and every day we face circumstances where control comes into play. Some people way have more control than others, but it is up to you to control and maintain each situation. We use feed forward, concurrent, and feedback controls as well as specific controls in different aspects of our lives. Each of these types of controls is used multiple times throughout each and every day.
My initial reaction once I heard about Koko, a gorilla that was being taught communication skills by a researcher, I was a little defensive. I am a strong believer that animals should not be kept in captivity, but rather, should be able to experience wildlife like they are intended to. However, as I began to see Koko as a baby and the bond that she had built with Patty Patterson, my outlook began to change. It was so adorable to see how Koko took to Patterson and not only participated in her activities, but seemed to enjoy them. The researchers treated Koko with respect and Koko did not seem to mind their company. I like how Patty discussed that they would celebrate Koko’s upcoming birthday and provide her with presents and a cake, something
Humans are an essential part of the animal kingdom, or at least they all seem to believe they are. People are just medium-sized mammals, so are people participants in natural selection, or have they risen above it? Planet Earth as an ecosystem is neither good nor evil, but the human race has always been prone to label in black, white and various shades of gray. Only because humans have cast a noble and civilized light on nature, media and reality as a whole does the concept of savagery exist.
I learned that the theme of Contrology came from Roman methodically that “A sane mind in a sound body”. So when we practicing Contrology you become balanced your body and mind are connected with each other. Which allows your mind and body to become comfortable with another, and you become one and being to live a meaningful life.
From the beginning of the movie, Ella had a wealthy parents and lives in a beautiful estate in a peaceful kingdom. She taught by her mother (Hayley Atwell) when she was young to believe in a presence of magic. Ella’s mother allowed her to be friends with animals, especially mice. But unfortunately, Ella’s mother faced fatal illness. Very fast soon, her mother passed away and before that she told Ella she always show kindness to peoples. She told this to Ella because she wanted Ella to be like her, kind to everyone. After few years, Ella’s father (Ben Chaplin) told Ella that his old acquaintance (Lord Tremaine) has passed away and Ella’s father chosen Tremaine’s Widow (Cate Blanchett) to become his second wife. Lady Tremaine had two daughters
Control theory states that people feel are interested in satisfying their needs, but in a legal/ethical manner. The bonds that people form with those around them is another reason that someone is more likely to not commit crime (Serva). There are two types of control within the control theory: external and internal control. External controls are the people around you that will notice if you are acting outside of the norm (Serva). Internal controls are the values that one has (Serva). So it is the little voice in our head saying do not do that bad action. Both internal and external control impact the willingness we have to obey the law.
Violence is a primal instinct. From a baboon that attacks another baboon for encroaching on its food; to a mother bear that mauls a wolf for approaching its cubs, animals possess violence as a natural response. Despite all of their technological advances and societal standards, people too are genetically predisposed to violence. From the thief that shoots a store clerk for a few dollars in a cash register; to a politician that buries blackmail by killing someone, people respond with violence.
I’ve never really noticed how often I think like an Anthropologist till this assignment. For instance, the most recent time I thought like an Anthropologist was when my family and I took a trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdoms. In Animal Kingdom there is a monkey, chimpanzees (I think they were chimps) as well as a gorilla exhibit in three or more parts of the park. One of the locations that stood out to me was Gorilla exhibit because of the most recent event that occurred with the little boy falling into the gorilla exhibit. Not only that I noticed that how different they were from the other primates. In this particular exhibit, here is a glass window separated the gorillas and the on lookers like myself. While watching the gorillas I thought of
People should have control over others because control verifies everything is in order- not in chaos; ensuring everyone with good lives.
Essay Question: Consider a film you know well which plays on a sense of time which escapes that of chronological ‘clock’ time. How does the film communicate this?
Kay, Whitson, Gaucher, and Galinsky (2008) are the original developers of the idea behind compensatory control. These researchers developed many ways in which individuals can psychologically restore their sense of control, including the three main forms throughout this paper. These mechanisms include, 1) our minds – creating patterns where they don’t exist, 2) our institutions – supporting sociopolitical institutions, and 3) the heavens – developing a belief in an interventionist God.
Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders.” We always think that forgetting is the solution to our misery. We indulge in the idea that ignorance is bliss and that what we don’t remember won’t hurt us. But do we really get the better of our mistakes if we forget about them? Do forgetting and ignorance make us better people? Does oblivion make us happier? Is it worth going out of our way to make sure we forget? These are the kinds of questions Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind addresses. Even though it is one of those movies which grapples with immense philosophical concepts, it does so effortlessly and without seeming elitist or pretentious. In this romance-science-fiction-comedy hybrid Charlie Kaufman 's amazing script as well as Michel Gondry 's whimsical direction captivate us. As is the case with every Kaufman film, the movie discusses the consequences of tampering with human nature in the light of human fallibility and memories. However, Eternal Sunshine has a remarkable essence in that the burning issue at its heart is whether your life is merely a predestined route to an inevitable destination.
As humans are we capable of being savages? I believe that the answer to this question is not as you will expect. Throughout the years humans have committed countless acts of savagery. From the slavery of our own kind (humans) in the 18th century to back stabbing our neighbors, savagery still does exist in our society. We exhibit savagery through many things but the ones I find most relevant are cyber bullying, adultery and manipulation. These three in my opinion are the most hurtful acts of savagery in today’s society. We use mean and hurtful words and pictures to put others down. We also hurt families by not staying committed and only thinking about ourselves. Finally, we manipulate others to get on top of situations.
We all like to pretend that we have control over our lives. Being in control makes us feel powerful, like we are ready for anything. With everything that goes on in the world we never can truly be in full control of our lives, but the moments that we felt we were in control are looked back as good times in our lives. Of course, it’s the moments where we lose control that stick with us the most.
