Demetrius the Silversmith The book of Acts chapter nineteen, records roughly twenty verses that pertain to Demetrius and the events that took place during Paul’s three-year ministry at Ephesus. Over the course of these few years, Paul had the opportunity to preach the Gospel and teach in the local synagogue. Paul’s labors were not without fruit and many lives were being changed because of the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. The city of Ephesus, like many cities throughout Asia Minor, was inundated with idolatry. For the most part, Paul’s witness and testimony, which was presented to many of the idol worshippers, resulted in a majority of his converts. One man in particular, Demetrius, “a warden of the Ephesian temple” made his livelihood from the sale of these enchantments. Because Paul’s preaching was having an impact on the decrease of Demetrius’ sales, Demetrius instigated a riot and charged that Paul was despising the goddess Diana (Acts 19:27). As the riot gained momentum, the leaders that instigated the riot caught Paul and his companions and brought them into the theatre. One can only imagine the chaos and confusion that echoed in the theatre between the silversmith guild, the temple worshippers, and the travelers that came to this annual event. Eventually the townclerk was ushered in to help quiet the crowd and restore order. The townclerk reminded the people that Paul and “Christianity” had not robbed or blasphemed the idol in question. He also reminded the silversmith guild that there were proper legal channels that could be used that had been established. The last thing that the city of Ephesus needed was a visit by the Roman authorities to squelch the events that had transpired.
