Trips to the wild are experiences that fathers and sons have always shared. In the wild they will not only get closer to nature; they will get closer to each other. Furthermore, these trips are a possibility for fathers to pass knowledge to their sons.
In Mark Slouka’s short story “Crossing” from 2009 a father takes his son on such a trip. But nature is not an opponent that should be underestimated, and the family gets to experience just how brutal nature can really be, when you do not watch your every step.
The main character in the short story is a father. The reader has access to his thoughts and emotions and through these he is portrayed.
It is obvious to the reader that the father cares a lot for his son, which makes him seem

(ll.38-39) The story contains a personification of the river. It [the river] wanted him gone (l.143). This makes the reader think of it as a monster and the whole experience seems to be a nightmare.
The old, rotten barn seems rather gloomy. It is described as a rib cage (l.72) and a skeleton (l.75), which adds further to the sense in a comparison with a nightmare.
In contrast to these places are the otherwise beautiful surroundings. They are what the father wanted to share with his son.
The menacing, empty, uncertain mood in the short story is set by the weather and the surroundings. Rain, mist and empty roads help build up suspense in the story, and the reader can sense that something bad is going to happen.
At the end of the story, when the father throws caution to the wind with the result that he and his son get trapped in the river, the reader is left with a question: Will they make it past the river? Due to the open ending, the reader will have to find the answer to this question by himself through an interpretation of the story. The father is stuck between two phases in his life and drags his son into his horrible situation. Because of this, the father feels remorse. He thinks that he has betrayed his son by bringing him in this situation: A situation that seems even more hopeless because of the father’s desperation and the fact that he thinks of the tale about the medieval priest. This tale could be an allegory for what
The father does not comply with his son and leaves the naked man alone in the cold. This further shows the differences between the boy and his father. The final contrast between the two is exemplified with the ending. Throughout the book the reader is allowed to assume that if the son dies in the novel then the father would consequently commit suicide. At the end of the story when the father dies first the boy stays strong and decides to blindly follow other survivors and put his faith in them. Throughout, the story; however the father doesn't put any trust into anyone. His son, being a foil of him decides to put his faith into other survivors and takes a leap of faith and follow them their camp. This instance further shows the stark difference between the father and the son.
The son had loved his father dearly but does not favor his way of life. His interest in school greatly outweighed his interest or desire to work on ‘The Boat’. He still had a love for the sea and in some way felt like he should carry out his family’s tradition. After his uncle had accepted a new job he took his position on the boat and promised his father that we would continue to sail with him for as long as he lived, and when his father passed despite the desires of his mother he followed his dreams and pursued education and all of its wonders. After living his life he finds himself longing for the sea again and isn’t so satisfied with his life.
Conflict was used effectively in the short story to reveal the theme of the story. The boy has an internal conflict about which parent to stay with, and because his father left, he seemed to have favored him. He wanted him back so badly that every night, he watches him on the six o’clock news while wearing his old jackets. He was blinded by his father’s sudden departure that he forgot about what is really important. Additionally, another development in the short story’s conflict has been used effectively to reveal the theme. When the boy went to Macdonald’s to see his father’s true colors, he thought: “I finished my drink quickly, thankful that he had to be back in the studio for the news.” By the time he saw his dad for the first time in a while, he knew he was not the man he thought he was. At that moment, he also realized that he lost sight of what he had all this time: His mother’s unconditional love. If it wasn’t for the characterization of
The book “A River Runs Through It” was written by Norman Maclean, who used many literary devices throughout his writing. The story follows a representation of Norman Maclean’s life, in which he recalls memories of his brother, Paul, and their fishing adventures. While the story itself is fun and intriguing, it is Maclean’s use of figurative language that grabs the reader’s attention. One can almost relive the moments mentioned as if he/she were there when it happened. The three particular literary devices that stood out were simile, personification, and tone.
The first passage reveals the parallel suffering occurring in the lives of different members of the family, which emphasizes the echoes between the sufferings of the father and the narrator. The narrator’s father’s despair over having watched
Parenthood was a factor in the boy’s life, this ideas gives you an insight on what he wanted the reader to convey. here are two different emotions running through this story from both the boys. In the author Wes Moore the emotion you feel while reading it is hurt and compassion.
The death of the narrator’s daughter, Grace, is something that the narrator suffers a lot and it is shocking for him as a father and a family. He remembers that his mother has given him the responsibility to take care of his brother, Sonny, which he is not able to do so. The death of his daughter leads him to approach his brother and listen to Sonny about what does he feels about life he has been going through for a long time.

In the Poem “A Story”, the poet Li-Young Lee conveys the convoluted and complex relationship of a father and son with techniques such as point of view and carefully used diction. Throughout the poem, a simple scene is depicted; story time between father and son. The child is satisfied and mesmerized by his “baba” while his father fears his own failure and the eventual adulthood of his son.
One aspect being that he wants to help others that they encounter along the way. When they had their camp set up on the beach, one day the thief came and stole all of their possessions. This further prompted the father to go on a hunt to find him with the pistol and have a want to kill him. Once they had found the thief, the father was in rage. The boy pleaded, “Papa please don’t kill the man” (256). Then the father prompted the thief to take off everything and put it in the cart. The thief begged him and told the father “Come on. Listen to the kid” (257). Later, once they father and boy had left, the boy would not stop crying. The boy pleaded to his father, “Just help him, Papa. Just help him” (259). Here was a turning point of the book because the father decided to listen to his son and returned the clothes to the road for the thief to come fetch. The father had to trust the boy and give help to others that actually needed it for once, instead of pretending to be the ‘good
"Some day the earth will weep, she will beg for her life, she will cry with tears of blood. You will make a choice, if you will help her or let her die, and when she dies, you will die too." -John Hollow Horn, Oglala Lakota. Line 5 is a oil pipeline that runs striaght through one of michigans great lakes. When it was originally installed it was hurting any wildlife or the land. In “The Third Bank of the River,” journey is shown by the family. The importance of the father going into complete isolation represents the effects he has on his peers. There is an opposite effect from this story because the father’s abandonment left a prominent mark on the family and their future. From an outside perspective, some may assume that the father would be the one who’s miserable and empty, yet this story carries out the reverse
Maus portrays the events of the holocaust in a distinctive way. Art Spiegelman uses illustrations to legitimately create a picture of the series of events. The illustrations are a little bit off historical accuracy and are some what biased. The author portrays the three cultures, the German, the Jews, and the Polish as animals. He uses dogs to represent the Germans, pigs to represent the Polish, and mice to represent the Jews. These historical inaccuracies were probably made to better represent the prejudice that the Jews had gained during the holocaust. Also, to represent how inferior the Jews felt during this time period.
At some point everyone likes to get a good laugh while watching a comedy. The hit series, Full House, would be an excellent situational comedy to watch. Lead actor, Danny is going through a rough time and needs help. Full House is filled with laughter and also a bit of seriousness at some points.
