Analytical Essay
During my high school years, I attended a Christian School that was founded by Southern Baptist missionaries. Their perspective on the world was black and white. They practiced traditional evangelism that felt like one had to live in a Christian bubble, or listen to Christian music, or read Christian magazines and books. This experience lacked spiritual depth and width for me.
My spiritual illumination began while attending Eastern Mennonite University. There I was introduced to Mel White, Stranger at the Gate. This book spoke of Bible verses I had been taught as a youth in new ways, especially about the lesbian, gay and transgendered lifestyles. It taught me to look through the Bible more carefully. It challenged me to think of Bible verses and stories deeper and more comprehensively. Previously, I had been taught to read Bible verses literally. I had not been challenged to study the Bible in a contextual way. This opened new Biblical means to me. Most importantly, the book spoke of an authentic Christian experience that did not fit the mold I had been taught in high school. I learned the world is not black and white.
This opened up my world. It encouraged me to dialogue with other students of different religious faiths, such as Muslims. This has taught me tolerance and respect for all of God’s people.
Also while in college, I was exposed in a new way to think about Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount:
43 You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a]
Having spent four years at Garrett- Evangelical, I have been introduced to different kinds of theologies. My theological education has broadened my whole concept about understanding theology. It has resonated with me at different times for
Throughout this semester I have had my ups and downs with some assignments, it has come to my attention that I need to work more on my writing. I personally believe one my strengths were coming up with ideas and what to me connected to the essays, but I need to work on conveying what I mean clearly and the flow of my writing. It would help the readers have a stronger understanding of my points and easier to read. If I would enhance my knowledge on vocabulary it would not only help my essays but my speech, allowing my audience to be more engaged in my writing or talking rather than using fairly common words. After saying that I do believe this class has challenged and improved the way I read stories. Not just reading word for word but reading in between the lines, for example understanding satire.
A red shirt with black jeans. As I approached the building's entrance, I thought nothing of my clothing. Neither did the officers who checked my identification, patted me down, and escorted me. The program coordinator had instructed us not to wear green shirts, to make our clothing distinct from the forest green uniforms of the "inmates." I sat in the classroom, preparing for class, going over readings for the lecture, thinking about possible debate topics, and conversing with the students. A correctional officer entered, glanced around, and declared to the instructor, "There should only be five inmates in here. I'm counting one extra."
It was the first day of the new semester. Dr. Razzaque, the professor giving the introductory lecture of his fluid mechanics course, decided to start with an audacious statement. “If you think mechanical engineering is too broad in scope for your liking, remember, you have seen nothing yet.” Aware that he had the class’s attention, he went on, “Think about what you have learned so far. You have taken courses in physics, multivariable calculus, electric circuits, computer programming and so on. It will be some time before you will properly understand how all these elements come together, but when you do, you will probably be surprised by your own understanding of the world.” He then went on to explain, citing Formula One, computational fluid dynamics and biomimetics, how mechanical engineering brings very diverse skill sets together. Those words felt, at the time, like a key to making sense of the plethora of courses that was my college life. Dr. Razzaque had suddenly made me realize the relevance of what I was learning. It would prove to be a pivotal point in my academic life. That lecture, and the following course, renewed my passion for mechanical engineering. I joined Dr. Hasan’s lab a year later as an undergraduate researcher and now I aspire to pursue graduate studies in mechanical engineering. All of these can be traced back to that quiet spring morning more than two years ago.
At ZCS we have a motto and that motto still counts for the bible class. In bible one of the lessons that stood out to me was the Holy Spirit Project. I felt that God nurtured me through the Holy Spirit Project because when I was working on it we had to point out what the Holy Spirit means to us and how we represent Him in our lives, and that really got me thinking about the Holy Spirit and what He has done and is doing in my life and how He is moving me every day and that just really grew me spiritually. I have been challenged in bible when we had the bible memory passage of 1 Corinthians 13:1-13, not only because it's long and made me challenged to work harder on it than I usually do on other bible memory but also it made me think about what it means and how it talks about love and how love is represented in our
Before I took my first college-level english course, I’d only had to do research for an essay on several occasions, and even then they weren’t even close to as long as the one I’ve written most recently. Up until now, all of my language arts classes were filled with things that I already knew, easy things that didn’t require me to change my writing style much, which likely explains why they were so boring. My approach to writing has changed throughout the process of taking an English 101 class.
When I first began taking this English course, I believed there was little left for me to learn in terms of writing. However, after examining an author’s purpose while writing my rhetorical analysis, grouping together evidence in support of my argument during the persuasive unit, and analyzing myself and my beliefs while reflecting on myself in my reflective analysis, I discovered that my writing evolves as I mature and develop new beliefs. Throughout the duration of this class, I uncovered new truths about myself through my writing and I have explored the realm of literature, and its relation to myself.
What motivated you to do your volunteer work? How did you come up with the idea for your activity? Who or what inspired you to get involved? How did your volunteer activity begin? Why did you feel it was important?
I learned a lot in my life like math, history, fitness, health, etc. Though I always had one curriculum that catch my interest than others. That subject would be english as the one that caught my eye as one might say. I was always fansticated with the certain techniques and skills you can learn from it. The expressiveness that people can learn from that subject and put what they learn into something big like for example writing an play, movie, skits, etc is truly something special. So as young adult I find myself willing to learn these intrestic skills that many talented writers have master and I have belief that my techniques will be sharpen to mastery. In english 102 I can proudly say that those beliefs did happen as the class went further through days and weeks so did my progression as a researcher and writer that in factly impact my future career. I own to the teacher and support programs in the school that provided me this which I couldn’t thrive without.
Upon completing my first semester of college, I would say that the moment I will most likely remember most is the preparation of my Portfolio for my Africana Studies 115 APPR University Writing class. While working on the assignment, reviewing and organizing each iteration along with the revisions to each and every exercise within the selected progression, I noticed the high level of critical thinking that I applied to my work throughout the semester. This level of critical thinking was something I could not see myself doing prior to my college experience. Another highlighted memory will be the fact that I developed a greater degree of camaraderie with my classmates. Usually, interactions with other individuals in a class, with whom I am not well acquainted, produced very poor results.
The first thing that I learned from this class was by The Dominican Charism “The Dominican passion for truth presumes a confidence in the intellect’s capacity for discerning truth and for reaching a level of clarity that enables both teacher and student to distinguish truth from error, and distortions and half-truths from the truth” (Charism) It made me more motivated and confident in what am doing today. Having a connection between the student and the teacher is nice, especially when the teacher understands how each student thinks. However, for my short-term goal, is to get a bachelor’s in business administration. My graduation will be next May of 2018; I am hoping that I can attend my graduation because this is the goal that I have
The “Nonstop” article showcased many student’s experiences that I can completely relate to, especially Becky Cooper’s situation described in the first sentence of the article. All throughout high school, even when I felt sick and didn’t want to go to school, I would tell myself, “I can’t miss school. I’ll have too much to catch up on the next day.” I couldn’t get myself to miss a school day in fear of falling behind and missing out on a productive day at school. The idea of always being productive and having something to do is something that always fills my mind, which is evident in the article. When the article describes Becky Cooper’s everyday life, the need to feel productive and busy is something that I could relate to. Throughout high
I read to provoke creativity, gain knowledge, but most importantly, to learn more about myself. With reading pieces, such as nonfiction books and news/magazine articles, I am able to gain insight into my own personal strengths and weaknesses, and ways to better myself as an individual. No matter who one might be, they always have room for improvement, whether it be through their career, health, family life, or anything else, for that matter. It personally bothers me when I see someone, with all the right resources needed to succeed, not apply themselves to their fullest potential. I believe everyone has their own pathway to success, and they have their own means of getting there, but it can only be accomplished with intrinsic motivation.
The writing process we practiced during this assignment was quite tedious. The Classes seemed to drag on forever. Since we had the class so early in the morning the motivation to write just wasn’t present. Our writing process was parted in so many different sections, that made it somewhat easier and more difficult at the same time. I didn't have to write it all in one sitting, if i did i would have gotten bored with it. Since our classes are every other day and there are sometimes weekends and I would sort of forget my train of thought from last class and am not able to pick up where i left off. Some parts of the story i got really into and cared about, while other parts of the story i just wanted to get it over with and just wrote down
Words aren’t necessary to express emotions. A bright-eyed smile can tell more than words do justice. The facial expressions and gestures from a single person have the ability to make a lasting impact on someone’s heart. Many forms of communication can be heard even when no sounds are present.
