School shootings have become an issue in recent years, wreaking havoc on young minds and ending lives. There are perfect solutions to this problem but getting rid of all of the weapons in the world is unrealistic. So the next best option is using an armed guard to protect the students and staff in schools. Armed guards are efficient in protecting everything they are used for so why not use them to protect the children and college students of America.
Some say that a trained teacher would be best, but the responsibilities of being the protector and teacher would spread the teacher too thin. Class would become less effective due to a feeling of nervousness and the teacher would not handle dangerous situations well with the intent of teaching students. Teachers are there to teach not to guard, to guard something or someone important a Guard

In 2013 there were 36 shootings causing 14 deaths, 5 suicides, and numerous injuries. In 2014 there 53 shootings causing 16 deaths, 9 suicides, and numerous injuries. In 2015 there were 73 shootings causing 25 deaths, 9 suicides, and numerous injuries(October 3 2015 School shootings in america since 2013.Everytown.org). Even the injuries cause stress and pain, let alone the suffering of those who lost loved ones in these incidents. One of the larger shootings along with columbine and sandy hook was the 2015 shooting at UCC, 8 college students and a professor were killed before the police could arrive and fix the situation. There are 4 full time and 3 part time guards working out at the college, but none were armed and therefore couldn’t solve the problem that they are supposed to. Columbine was a shooting in 1999 killing 12 students and a teacher. Sandy hook was a shooting in 2012 at an elementary school killing 20 students and 6 adults. Those 20 students were 6 and 7 year olds, they were killed before they could experience hardly anything that life has to
School shootings are a common occurrence on daily news. Students shouldn’t terrify going to school with the mindset that a shooter will show up with intention of killing people. Ideally, students leave home for school to learn, and not worried someone will come in and shoot everyone. When I was younger I would go to the bathroom worried a shooter would enter my school leaving me alone in a life or death situation. School security improvement is extremely important because children should feel safe and never in danger. Also, schools need better ways of helping children feel safe when they come for six hours everyday. More could be done for students, not only as prevention from shootings occurring but from relieving young children of unnecessary anxiety.
The problem with society, is that people tend to wait for the problem to occur before making a change. Troubled children and teens have always existed but unfortunately now we’ve entered into an era where shootings are no longer just seen in action movies, it has now become a reality in our schools. Why do these children end up killing their classmates and why the number of school shootings in America have increased in the past several years? These articles try to give some kind of explanation into why these tragic accidents occur. As well as preventions that teachers, parents, and the community as a whole can partake in. This paper will focus on these two main ideas or themes.
High school shootings have been occurring all over the country. All incidents leading to one or more deaths: Jonesboro, Fayetteville, Edinboro, Pearl, Moses Lake, Grayson, Olivehurst, Bethel, West Paducah, and many more. It will never happen to me, you could say, well, it could.y Behind school shootings students spend one hundred and eighty days per year at school, they spend so much time getting an education, but is the environment they’re in actually safe? There are many causes of school shootings and so they are effects.
Although some say armed police officers in schools may be a danger to all, armed police officers should be present in schools because their presence alone can give a sense of safety. Having armed police officers on campus can deter bad situations from happening. They can also have an impact of the number of school shootings that occur. They can also help with situations that may occur with students that may have conflict with other students that a teacher or staff member may not be able to handle. In this era that we live in having armed officers in schools is a way to insure the safety of students.
School shootings strike into the heart of every American. From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Sandy Hook, the thought of innocent young students being mercilessly mowed down wrenches one’s heart. Yet these events continue to happen, and in ever increasing numbers. What could possibly drive a person to commit such a horrifying act?
Numerous studies have been conducted to determine if teachers should be in possession of a firearm while on school properties and if this will decrease the number and magnitude of school shootings. Many scholars believe equipping teachers with firearms will be costly and end up unnecessarily endangering more students, but many scholars claim that a teacher should be the last line of defense against a school shooter. The question this paper hopes to answer is how can equipping teachers who teach grades K-12 help to prevent school shootings in the United States. This paper will attempt to answer that question by examining the perspectives of school administration and law enforcement, the impact on student’s safety and education, the
Recently in America a tragedy occurred in San Bernardino, 14 people were murdered by 2 people that allegedly had ties to ISIS. Although officers responded in a matter of minutes, that speed isn’t always available, especially in rural areas. Is this the beginning of a change in America? I believe this is so and I also believe mass shootings should be addressed more specifically school shootings because the means of protection aren’t there. “Since 2013, there have been at least 161 school shootings in America- an average of nearly one a week.” (161 School Shootings in America Since 2013. everytownresearch.org.) That statistic includes 3 Indiana schools St. Mary’s Catholic School in Griffith, Indiana on 4/21/14, Purdue University on 1/21/14 and Indiana State on 9/29/14, also a high school in Louisville, Kentucky a day after the Indiana State shooting. These aren’t just happening on the west coast or down in Florida where the news only talks about, the places that seem to never be close, they’re happening close to home
Another solution would be the training and arming of teachers, allowing those willing to protect their students to have a means to do so. This likely could have saved the life of Victoria Soto, a brave but unarmed 27 year old teacher who hid her students and then told the Sandy Hook Elementary School gunman that they were in the gym before she, with no means by which to protect herself, was killed.
Even though students can be freaked out, they should ask themselves if they would rather be freaked out and be alive at officers that are there to protect them or be dead because their school was shot up and the police couldn’t get there quick enough. Kevin Quinn president of the National Association of School Resource Officers worries that an armed teacher may actually put kids more at risk instead of protecting them. Having an armed teacher on campus also could complicate matters for a responding officer who doesn't know if the teacher is an employee or the shooter. Teachers are trained to protect their students so they would end up staying in their rooms protecting their students, and that is what officers at the school are for so teachers have no point to leave their
Teachers need to be armed everyday at school. Teachers need to protect the students because we don’t want it to happen like in Parkland, Florida Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Arming teachers is a great idea than having a security because what if the shooter passes the security, and he or
Most of us learned when we were very young that we should not judge by appearances. But, in the aftermath of massacres in schools everywhere, a sane person has to take seriously what the material world shows - and pass judgment. After all, a lack of judgment and subsequent action may lead to further youth violence.
Teaching at a typical small town school in rural America one day, shots ring out. Active shooter drills come to mind, but what do we do, where do we go, how many students are present? Panic sets in. Thoughts of hiding, running, calling out for help and screaming all flash across the forefront of the mind when a person can be seen walking down the hall with a large gun in hand. No one ever thinks it could happen in a town, school, or church like ours but when the act is committed everyone feels the betrayal. Although schools from elementary to universities have adopted drills for active shooters and have routes with plans drawn up we never know how we will truly react until the time comes. Armed guards stand at the ready at most entryway doors but they are only one person and can not be everywhere always. In a recent study of active shooters for the Federal Bureau of Investigations, J.Pete Blair and Katherine W. Schweit have said, “The second most common incident locations were in educational environments…and the study results established that …these incidents involved some of the highest casualty numbers” (20). Crime is always a threat to education and defending our students nationwide should be a priority. The trouble begins with the fact that the school shootings are becoming more regular. Allowing teachers to be armed gives administration, faculty and students a more successful chance at survival against an active shooter in our education systems.
Discursive essay- Racheal Matheson So far in 2018 there has been a total of eleven school shootings just in the United States alone, all just in the month of January. There are many arguments for having teachers armed in the United States. Some people think that it will make schools much safer for the students and teachers and make the likelihood of an attack far less likely. However, there are arguments against this idea because many people think that teachers jobs are just to educate our students not to security guard them.
Around the world, many school shootings have been occurring. Some people think that armed guards might be needed to protect students, but others think that that would be a bit too much. Guards are not needed in public schools to protect students. It could scare children, it could distract learning, and there are many more solutions than resorting to guards immediately. If people hired armed guards, the students could be frightened that people with guns are in the school.
It is without a doubt that there has been an increase in violent crimes in schools throughout recent years. School shootings continue to become more and more common, especially in North America. Safety concerns for any and all students and staff in schools are at all all time high due to the high number of fatal and non-fatal occurring incidences. Since 2013 to the present, it is estimated that the United States has seen approximately 205 school shootings. Weekly, that is a shocking one shooting on average. Many of these shootings have resulted in the injuries and deaths of multiple of students and staff members. (Everytown Research, 2017) Evidently, school shootings are tragic events that affect so many more people than just the victims. However, these events are also interesting to look at from the psychological and sociological point of views. Through much research, it can be concluded that school shootings are a complex problem that are caused by a mix of improper brain development and societal and media influences which motivate school shooters to emerge. Psychological factors may include struggling with mental illnesses and/or abuse that leads to damaged brain development. Additionally, being bullied and/or the role of the media are examples of sociological factors.
