Analyzing Cat Stevens 'Poems Father And Son'

Cat Stevens, from his own store of felt, observed, and/or imagined experiences, wrote the poem “Father and Son”. This poem creates new experiences for his audience and allows them to participate in the poem, from which they may gain a greater awareness and understanding of their world. Stevens utilizes his poem in order to both increase and clarify the audience’s range of experience. While interpreting and trying to understand this poem I became extremely aware of the relationship between the two characters: a father and his son. The father and his son’s relationship is very conflicted. They have difficulty communicating and understanding one another. Wanting to help, the father attempts to give his son valuable advice about life, saying that he is satisfied with his own life and his son will also be satisfied if he takes an identical path. However, like many teenagers, the son disregards the importance of his father’s words. The son doesn’t physically speak in this poem as his lyrics in the song are his thoughts. Nevertheless, it is evident through his thoughts that he is struggling to communicate to his father that he wants take a path different from the one his father wants him to take. His frustration is apparent as he has tried to explain in the past, but his repeated attempts inevitably fail as his father always “turns away again”.
