Aboriginal art in Australia is both beautiful and meaningful. According to Perkins, Hetti and West (2007) Aboriginal art allows for reconciliation of the events of the past two centuries’ that is used as inspiration for their work. Whilst researching the Indigenous cultural heritage of Mount Barker, Western Australia I came across a well know Noongar artist from the region, Charlie Colbung. Colbung was born in Mount Barker in 1970 and still resides in the South West region where he is an Indigenous health worker as well as an Indigenous programs officer for the Great Southern TAFE (Design and Art Australia, n.d.). There are two prominent themes in Aboriginal art consisting of both country such as the land and kinship, the people (Perkins, Hetti

Onus used a range of diverse mediums, methods and styles in his work; that illustrated qualities of his work being derived from Western culture. My Christian artist is James Seward. James Seward was born in Alabama, and raised in Tennessee. He spent summers with his grandparents in the wild back-country of Alabama. When he was six, his grandfather bought him his first set of oil paints, and as a young child he often painted his grandparents by lamp-light, to their great astonishment. "From the time I was five years old, I was continually painting and drawing in that great environment,” the artist reminisces with fondness.
Boyd comes from an artistic family. This had an affect on his artwork as both of his parents, Merric and Doris Boyd, were potters and painters while his brothers were both artists, one a sculptor and the other a painter. This artistic influence helped lead him into becoming an artist as he was exposed to art from a young age. His humanitarian influences and social conscience came from writers such as Dostoyevsky and Kafka. Boyd was exposed to these writers by Jewish immigrant artist Yosl Bergner who was his teacher at Melbourne night classes, which Boyd started attending at age 14 after leaving school. After this time his talent was nurtured by his grandfather who was a landscape artist.

Throughout Stephen’s early life the idea of art is almost lost for him. Stephen always has the idea of art in his mind and can be considered his one true love. The ambition of art did not always influence his thinking and ideals until later in his teenage years. The challenges and mental boundaries he experiences can contribute to the artist he wants to become, therefore making him very open minded artist with traditional Irish roots.
