Tamika is researching an essay that she needs to write for social studies. It is about the civil rights movement of the 1960’s.
During her research she came across many different types of texts about the political leaders, and the movement itself.
There were some autobiographies, historical fiction novels, and newspaper articles available.
Tamika was overwhelmed with the amount of choices available. She decided to begin with two different resources.
She selected a historical fiction novel and a newspaper article to read. The newspaper article was non-fiction, which means it was based on true information.
The fiction novel was a story that was made up by the author. but it was still valuable to

In the non-fiction newspaper article Tamika read about the Freedom Rider’s experiences as they attempted to change segregation laws of the south.
The article discussed the non-violent methods the Freedom Riders used to protest against the unfair laws.
During their protest, African American riders used bathrooms that were labeled “whites only.” They also sat at lunch counters that served whites only.
Because this was non-fiction, the author presented the facts only and excluded all personal opinions.
Reading about the true experiences of the Freedom Riders made Tamika appreciate the equal freedoms and privileges all races in America have today.

Tamika enjoyed reading the historical fiction novel more than the newspaper article because she could relate to the main

Harold has read a fictional short story about a young boy attending the country fair in his hometown.
While reading, Harold was reminded of growing up on a farm and attending the annual carnival and country fair.
Harold wanted to record some of the experiences he had at the fair as well, but his story would be based on true events.
Harold wrote a short autobiography. Even though the topic was the same, Harold presented his story as non-fiction because it was based on true events.

For Sarah’s creative writing class she has a unique project. She is supposed to take her short story and present the same information as non-fiction.
Sarah’s short story is about a young boy who has dreams of becoming a professional chef.
He often cooks with his grandmother and has learned to make many international dishes under her instruction.
In order to present that information as non-fiction, Sarah must stick with the facts and leave her personal opinion out of

Book are magnificent things. Fiction books are created with such details, they only hold small or no real life facts or events. In contrast, nonfiction books do the complete opposite. Nonfiction books contain facts or events from the past that occurred, they are also incorporated with details to make the story more interesting, to give it more imagery, feel, and a better tone. When an author does so, they manage to make the book have a “timeless quality,” which is incredibly important to a nonfiction book. An author is capable of getting this quality in their books by incorporating the facts or events, alongside rhetorical strategies to give life and meaning to their book. Not every author can manage to do this, although, the author by the name of Erik Larson did so, in his book, The Devil in the White City: Murder,
When weighing the huge debate of fiction versus non-fiction, one must take into account the element of imagination that one is able to use when writing a novel regarding events that have occurred in the past. Shiloh: A Novel, written by Shelby Foote, can use several different components related to fiction in order to help the reader be able to further comprehend what happened at the Battle of Shiloh during the American Civil War without having to explain the actual events by using real historical references.
The way in which authors portray a historical event as fictional or historical can change the way in which the reader understands that event. When reading historical fiction, it is important to know which events are truth and which are fictional. When writing the book, The Journal of Biddy Owens, Walter Dean Myers accurately portrayed the events of Biddy Owens’ life and the time period of 1948.
For the genre, I decided to pick realistic fiction because I feel as if the story was so realistic that it could be true because it isn't based on a true story or a true story at all so, therefore, it's realistic fiction.

Freedom Riders exposed the many ways of Southern resistance by the numerous acts of violence committed towards them. Violence was experienced not from civilians, police officers and a mass of Ku Klux Klan members (KKK). The Freedom riders faced bus bombings, being beaten, and near lynching. The Freedom Riders decided to unmask what was happening in the south to showcase the non-enforcement of the United States Supreme Court decisions Morgan v. Virginia in 1946 and Boynton v. Virginia in 1960, which ruled that segregated public buses were unconstitutional. The Southern states had ignored the rulings and the federal government did nothing to enforce them. "The Riders' dangerous passage through the bus terminals and jails of the Jim Crow South represented only one part of an extended journey for justice that stretched back to the dawn of American history and beyond" (Arsenault 10). The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsored most of the Freedom Rides, but some were also organized by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). The Freedom Rides consisted of dramatic sit-ins against segregated lunch counters, conducted by students and youth throughout the South, and boycotts of retail establishments that maintained segregated facilities, beginning in 1960.The Supreme Court's decision in Boynton supported the right of interstate travelers to disregard local segregation ordinances. Southern local and state police considered the actions of the Freedom Riders to be

Freedom on my mind expressed a sad struggle against segregation and unjust in the Mississippi and how a brave many stood to fight. The straw boss who was in charge of the fields would say “The kids are already too big for school” to keep black children out of school and work them. One main freedom rider that stuck out to me was how Endesha Ida Mae Holland who was working for a white family and at the very young age of 11 was sexually assaulted. It would be appalling, girls were being raped by white men and could not tell their parents because their parents might be killed. Unfortunality this and many other sadly reports of cold-heartedness was not uncommon. This was a very disheartened time of unequally for southern black people.
“[F]or me, while the nature of fiction or fictionality are things that writers might need to be concerned with to get on with their work, I don’t believe that the nature of fiction is one of the burning issues of the late twentieth century. It’s not one of the things I want to turn to novels and art to find out about.”
We say a work of fiction is authentic when we feel that what it portrays is likely to have occurred in a certain setting in a certain period. It need not have actually happened as it is described word to word, but there is nothing in the book that precludes the chances of it ever happening. In fiction, the writer tries to portray only the most interesting and eventful things, and characters speak dialogues rich in meaning which bring out their characters and personalities. Certainly, real life will never be that interesting at a stretch.
