I believe the statement, learning and cognition are fundamentally situated means that acquiring knowledge and achieving meaningful learning is accomplished by applying new concepts in authentic situations. Authentic situations are every day, real-world situations that are of interest to students. It is learning that is relevant and immerses students in solving problems by participating in activities that will help them transfer knowledge gained to new situations. This type of learning helps students to be self-motivated, take control of their own learning, and begin to pose further questions. This directly pertains to inquiry learning. As a librarian, we can situate cognitive learning by creating opportunities for students. By taking a broad concept and helping students explore and connect its effect on their personal lives creates authentic situations. Librarians should collaborate with teachers and create these learning opportunities. We can provide resources and materials that help students explore their talents, interests, and abilities. We can also help students expand their learning in the classroom by helping them further explore topics according to their learning styles and interest. It is our responsibility to provide students with resources and materials that reach beyond the school walls that encourage learning and doing.
