“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn” states Phil Collins. This quote is extremely powerful in a classroom setting, where the teacher and students exchange roles constantly during the learning process. Observations are a powerful tool for future teachers due to them learning how the classroom is conducted as well as what works and does not work. My observation was at Webb City Middle School in Webb City, Missouri with Mrs. Swaim’s 6th grade social studies class. Mrs. Swaim utilized many strategies doing the Ancient Egypt lesson. During the months of September and October this semester I spent time at two different schools in four different classrooms. Being able to observe different classes and teachers at Westside Junior High and South Live Oak Elementary was a very new and exciting experience for me since I can’t say I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My experiences at these schools gave me a better insight into the differences between schools, classrooms, and teachers. Ancient Egypt was a captivating and intricate civilization. Over the years, historians have found it easier to study this civilization, rather than other historical civilizations, because the Egyptians went through great lengths to record their history. Besides being decent record keepers, they were very religious, and “ahead of their time,” due to their technological and economic breakthroughs. Because of the aspects of this culture, it has to be one of the greatest civilizations of the world.
My observation for the spring semester was placed at Pine Richland High School. I was able to watch over John Dolphin’s twelfth grade British literature course. John Dolphin has been teaching at Pine Richland for the past eighteen years. I went to observe his class three times. Two out of three of those visits I was able to be at the school all day long to really get the feel of the way it is like to be at the school all day and seeing the difference of his eight classes. Throughout my time there I learned different strategies on how to keep the students involved, the way that a school of this size is ran, and the difference of how John taught compared to my previous observation teacher.
At Arts-Based School I did my observation in Leni Fragakis’s third grade class. This was the first observation I had done since learning about instructional design. Since learning it, I now have a new way of observing, I pay more attention to the teacher; how she implemented the lessons, what strategies she uses, and the types of assessments she uses. This gives me a better experience because before I was just paying attention to what the students were doing and their part in the classroom and now I am paying attention to so much more. Even though it is important to watch the kids, I now also know how important it is to observe the teacher, too. I was also able to observe what I am learning in class be used in the classroom.

Journal one of the Westminster College class EDU 562 Field Experience was related to observation and participation with a first grade classroom, on Monday, January 4, 2016. Upon arrival the class teacher provided instructions to assist in the set up of the classroom January calendar, make a graph of the lunch choices, and to pass out morning work for the students to complete as they arrived in the classroom. Careful observations enable the teaching assistant to make objective assessments relating to each pupils behaviour patterns, learning styles, levels of development, existing skills, curriculum strengths and weaknesses, current learning needs and learning achievements. Observations enable teaching assistants to stay aware of children’s changing interests; this can encourage pupils to learn as they are more likely to be interested in learning if the topics are related to the things that children are familiar with. Observations are also a good way to monitor pupil’s behaviour and to support development in all seven areas of learning.

Conducting classroom observations are very important to the prospective teacher. Observing helps show how experienced teachers manage their classroom. For this observation it was important to notice how the classroom was arranged, how the teacher interacted with the students, the teacher’s management style, and interview the teacher.
Observation is something that educators do carefully to gain information about young children. Documentation is the process of collecting evidence that serves as a record. When teachers observe the young children, it provides the information that the teachers need to build relationships with individual children and enable them to be successful learners. The best way the teachers should learn about children by carefully watching them, listening to them and studying their work. The observation’s reflection has already influenced the way I plan and teach. Reflecting on my work helped me improve my teaching strategies and gain the ability to schedule plans that respond to the students’ needs. In my opinion, observation is one of the most successful strategies that are used in the practicum course to support teachers. I believe that AUD has formed an enthusiastic teaching and learning community.
