The Rise and Fall of Ancient Greece
From the ancient world to modern civilization, Greek civilization has left its impact on our world throughout history. From Greece’s rise and fall, its social, political, and cultural contributions, without the Greeks we would not be as advanced as we are today. The western world was highly influenced by the Greeks, gaining ideas about art, architecture, philosophy, and science.
The first people to actually inhabit Greece were the Myceneans. It is hard to figure out exactly where they came from, but historians can conclude that they were the first advanced society to settle in Greece based to archeological discoveries. As advanced as this civilization was however,

The way someone was treated was determined by their social status and wealth. The people on the top of the “food chain” were land owners, farmers, and craftsman. Below these people are the women, and below the women are the slaves. To make the social ladder of ancient Greece seem simple, you can say that if you were not a male, wealthy, or a contributor to the community, you were nothing. Those were the only people who had any rights worth even having. Women could not climb the social ladder, but were placed into the social group they were born into, or married into. Slaves did not contribute to the community, but were allowed to have a family and land if their masters permitted it. The Greeks influenced the architecture of Pompeii homes by introducing the peristyle, and open-air court with a colonnaded portico opening onto rooms. (Carswell et. al., Splendors of the Past, 109). Not only did the western civilizations become awed with Greek architecture, they became inspired by the artwork as well. Greek artwork was the inspiration source of many artists in the western world. Some of the philosophers of the western Renaissance era were greatly influenced by the Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato. Great literature and mathematic developments were also adopted by the westerners. These mathematic ideas are some that we still use today with the symbols such as pi and delta symbols. The ancient Greeks have influenced the way nations run their people, the way people view knowledge and their lives, and the way people feel about their home and native country. All of these contributions that the ancient Greeks made are still prevalent not just in American culture, but in society as a whole. The ancient Greeks made several contributions to Western civilization such as the idea of democracy, philosophy, and value of patriotism and national pride. The idea of having a democratic government, which comes from the ancient Greeks, has influenced several nations around the world to govern their people with some form of democracy.
Ancient Greek stands in an important position in the art history. Ancient Greek art proper emerged during the eigth century BCE. Classical and Hellenistic period are the most impressive eras of Greece. There are many values of Greek 's culture become the fundamental tenets of today 's western civilization. Greeks created the concept of democracy and make a huge contributions in the fields of science, literature and art. Ancient Greece 's art and architecture also have a strong influential to western society. Moreover, the Greeks made their gods into humans and their humans into gods. The perfect individual became the Greek ideal and the portrayal of beautiful humans became the focus of many of the greatest Greek artists. Greek ideal is one of the most important cultures of Greece and it also has a great influence of Greek religion, philosophy and society. The art work of Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic Period have shown that Greek has achieved their lofty goals in many aspects of their civilization.
Ancient Greek culture had major influences on today’s culture; some of these influences include mathematics, government, art and architecture; they even did research in the field of medicine. Many cultures and religions have adapted their ideas from the ancient Greeks. Without the influences of the ancient Greeks our society wouldn’t be the way it is today. The Greek culture lasted from around 776 BCE to 146 BCE (though it is argued to have begun around 1000 BCE), during this time they invented many technologies and refined old technologies. These things are what caused the ancient Greek culture to be such a powerful influence on western society today.

Architecture played a pivotal role in both the religion and daily life of ancient Greek society. The Greeks produced some of the world’s most enduring architectural monuments, many of which are still standing today. These include the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus, and the Temple of Poseidon. Perhaps one of the largest contributions of the ancient Greeks to western civilization in regards to architecture was their development of the three fundamental architectural systems of design, the Doric, Iconic, and Corinthian orders. The Greeks used their own ideas and thought of new ways to add to their culture, while the Romans mostly mixed and matched ideas from other civilizations and cultures to make their own. Every idea has a start and a history that can be traced back in time. An incredible amount of these ideas and thoughts were started by great ancient civilizations. These ancient civilizations are the base of all modern knowledge. No ancient civilization has contributed more to this base than the civilization of Ancient Greece.
