Ancient Greece Vs Romans

In examining the impact that the ancient world has had on modern Western civilization, the two ancient civilizations which are frequently understood as having had the greatest influence are Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. These two civilizations would eventually come to shape much of what would become the modern European culture, politics and society, and by extension, a vast proportion of global culture and society. In examining the trajectory of modern history in an era of globalization of Western ideas and modes of living, the importance of these civilizations in world history is extensive, contributing to cultural, political and social trends which may well dominate the globe in the future.

​There are two main periods in Greece history, Hellenic and Hellenistic period. They have some similarities but they are significantly different. Many people believe that the Classical era is the most impressive due to the success in literature, science, philosophy and architecture, which does not mean that the Ancient Greece is less significant. While in Hellenic era they saw rising and falling of the polis in Hellenistic era it was more about war and fighting for among the prevailing dynasties. The thing that they have in common is that they were consistent in discovering new philosophies and science also decreasing the role of gods.

In western ancient world, there were kings who tried to bring the world come together ideologically, culturally and politically. This caused lots of cultural exchange between people and help them understand and respect each other’s ways of life. On the other hand, politically, it created a lot of major wars. It took a large amount of resources and decades to end these wars. As a result of these wars, most kingdoms suffered from both economical and political problems. Therefore, it is fair to say that Greek/Hellenistic civilization could be characterized as being a period of intellectual and cultural achievement but political failure.

Greek mythology and Roman mythology both have an importance in both ancient history and the modern world. People often confuse the two and mistake them for each other. They may be similar on paper but they are very different. Greek mythology is more original, had a bigger influence on the ancient people, and has a bigger influence on the modern world.

The second major similarity between ancient Greek and Roman civilizations was that their citizens voted on who to make their elected officials, however the difference was that each culture differed in their definition of a citizen. The Greeks only recognized native-born males having the right of citizenship, women and slaves could not be citizens and therefore could not vote. The Romans on the other hand, recognized foreigners residing within Italy as half-citizens giving them full legal rights but not the right to vote. Greece mostly voted into office people of middle- to upper-class citizens, whereas Rome only voted in the rich 10% of their population. Even though history seems to show that the Greeks were more fair by randomly selecting citizens to run for office, the Roman government specifically chose who would run for election similar to our political race today where the Republican and Democratic parties choose who will be there candidates.

Classical Greece and Rome are two main cultures in European history, they both influenced today's society tremendously through their similarities and differences. Some of their similarities and differences included how they ran their government, how they expressed themselves through art, and what they believed for a religion.

Also, the structure of government of the Roman and American republic has some similarities. The basis of both civilizations possessed an overwhelming military strength that may be attributed to the success of each nation. No other country has been dominant culturally, economically, technologically, and militarily in the history of the world since the Roman Empire."(Krauthammer, 2004) The United States of America has the makings of a vast empire, being a leader in all of the aforementioned areas. If you were to take a citizen of the current day United States and put him/her in Ancient Rome, I feel that aside from the obvious cultural differences, that person would notice that day to day life would not be that much different from that of life

Aside from these physical differences, there is a difference in the goals between the Greeks and the Romans. In the first case what concerns the Greek city-states is limited to self-preservation if not individual fame and success. The Romans, on the other hand, were concerned with the success of the country as a whole; they knew that if the whole was successful, then the individual parts would also benefit.

Although there are many similarities and overlaps between the deities of the Norse pantheon and the Greek pantheon of ancient religion, the pantheons themselves have differences that are major enough to make it difficult to categorize them together, except for both pantheons falling under the umbrella of polytheistic religions, as you would the Greek and Roman pantheons. The ancient Norse religion was practiced as the main religion by Scandinavian people until around 1100 A.D. The ancient Greek pantheon was the main religion in greece, even after it being conquered by the Roman empire, until around 400 A.D. when the Roman empire converted to christianity.

First of all, Ancient Greece and Rome have both influenced us by their ways of government. The Greeks had a democracy, which is instilled in us today. It is the fundamental belief that everyone has the right to control what goes on in their government. Without the Greek administration, many modern nations would not be run the same way and history would not be the same. The Greeks had democracy because it was able to be easily maintained. They had such small communities, or city-states, that they were always able to have direct votes with the people. Some countries, like the US, are too large to have a direct vote, so there are variations of the method. The Romans had a Senate which controlled the Romans and chose what happened to the people for them. This is most common example in western

Two of the most important civilizations where Ancient Rome and Greece. Both had prosperous times. Rome has the Pax Romana and Greece had Athens in the Golden Age of Athens. Although both important, Rome and Athens were very different civilizations. I would prefer to live in Athens during the Athenian Golden Age then in Rome during the Pax Romana because Athens had more interesting religion and a superior political system.

The difference of Greece and Rome was argued to be that Rome was organized and was more structured (this was stated by Roman orator Cato.)

In around 428-65 BC, Greece and Rome were both creating new cultural ideals, ways of using government, and built allies to help benefit the country. Both Empires created similar cultures including cities,technology, complex institutions, record keeping and specialized works. Eventually when they began to expand into a vast empires, they had to come up with ways of organizing and obtaining enough resources for their people. This lead to complex trading tactics, forms of government, and social structure. Even though Rome and Greece were both critical to the creation of the United States, Rome was more influential due to the way it trades with other countries, glorified people of certain social positions, and structured its government.

Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome were two different civilizations. They both had their own people, beliefs, and morals. Although they had their differences, they also had some similarities.

Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire two civilizations that have so much in common but are yet so vastly different. Both civilizations have seen their fair share of their empires rise and fall. Greece and Roman today are both tourist places that we visit for the history they provide from hundreds of years ago.
