The books I read were the Odysseus and the Old Man and the Sea. In the Odysseus, the most memorable moment to me was that when Odysseus came back to his house as a beggar, the most men in his house all gave him food generously except Antinoos. Unlike the other men, he didn’t pity Odysseus at all. He called Odysseus the “nuisance that bad luck has brought to our spoil our dinner” (p. 221). He told Odysseus to “leave this hall with a sound skin after the piece of rudeness” (p. 221) and “picking up the footstool, he threw it, and hit him full on the back under the right shoulder” (p. 221). But Odysseus wasn’t afraid of him, he “stood firm as a rock” (p. 221) though it was painful. At that time,

It is very alike in the book the Old Man and the Sea. When the big fish started circling, the old man “had been seeing black spots before his eyes and the sweat salted his eyes and slated the cut over his eye and on his forehead” (p. 87), he “had felt faint and dizzy” (p. 87) every time the fish circled, but he still held the line all the time and never let it go. And after he caught the fish successfully, the sharks were coming after them. He didn 't easily give up all the hope of survival, instead, he “was full of resolution” (p. 101) and decided to fight back. Due to his firm willpower, he killed all the sharks at last. During that fishing, the old man was alone all the time, only thing that supported him was his strong desire of survival. For both Odysseus and the old man, what they believed were not exactly the same though, it helped them to get through all the difficulties and finally achieved their wishes. How they overcome these sufferings had moved me deeply and left a profound impression for me.
And all the memorable moments above can lead to one point – the books’ themes. For the Odysseus, the theme of the whole book was mainly about the will of backing home and getting freedom. Odysseus wasn 't lucky enough to have a good fortune. But he didn 't lose his hope. When he was forced to stay on the Calypso’s Island, he didn 't submit to Calypso due to her
When it was time to get rid of the suitors in Odysseus and his son Telemachus home they come up with a plan. Odysseus is pretending to be a beggar and everyone's gives him food when he goes around except for Antinoos. When the beggar comes to ask Antinoos for food he gets very angry, the text says “Boiling over Antinoos gave him a scathing look and let fly, now you won't get out of the hall unsacred, I swear, not after such a filthy string of insult! With that he seized the stool and hurled it-- Square in the back it
Lizeth Marin Honors Introduction to Literature Period 3 18 April 2008 Odysseus: Hero or Villain? Heading home, to Ithaca, Odysseus is faced upon many obstacles that he and his men try to overcome, but in the end substantiate that Odysseus is a villain. “The old soldier in despair: He has spent ten years (seven of them as Calypso’s not entirely unwillingly captive) trying to get home” (652, summary). Evidence proves that Odysseus is a villain, because he tries to convince that he was kept unwillingly by Calypso. However, it is true that Odysseus was kept as Calypso’s captive for a time. Yet he can still be judged as a villain, because he does not just stay as a prisoner, no, he assists Calypso by being with her for the pleasures that
In the movie and the book Odysseus does a lot of the same thing. Odysseus is known to be a hero and to either win or lose. He usually has a victory, he is a very smart man who thinks everything through before going through with it. Victory motivates Odysseus. He wants to return home and live well in Ithaca. In the movie and book one of the things he does the
In The Odyssey, Odysseus portrays an important trait to the story, perseverance. His perseverance really stands out as something that he has and always will have. On his long journey home, he never gives up and just stays where he is, no matter how tempting. He always manages to push through and keep getting closer to his goal of returning home. An example of when he does this is when he is faced with the challenge of getting past Skylla and Kharybdis. He knows that either path will kill at least some of his men and possibly him, but he knows he has to keep going. "And all this time,/ in travail,
This quote is from the time Odysseus is trapped on an island by the nymph Calypso for nine years. These powerful words portray clearly the pain that Odysseus bears within him thus giving the reader a fuller understanding of the story and his character.
Near the end of the book, when Odysseus is back in Ithaca, he must pretend to be a beggar in order to plan the suitors’ demise without their knowledge. When Odysseus sees his old dog, Argos, wait until the moment he saw his master once more before dying, Odysseus must hold back his tears so that Emmaus the loyal swineherd won’t realize the old beggar is, in fact, Odysseus. Not only was he forced to hide his identity, but he also had to endure very demeaning situations as well, such as when he is humiliated by the very suitors he despises. For example, when Melanthius the unloyal goatherd kicked him, instead of killing Melanthius on the spot, Odysseus stayed quiet. Or when Odysseus begged for food from Antinous, only to have the suitor throw a stool at him, square in the back. In the end though, Odysseus’ restraint payed off, and he earned his revenge. For Melanthius, Odysseus strung him up on a plank and then dangled him from the rafters before cutting off his extremities. For Antinous, Odysseus gave him the gift of an arrow through the throat. Thankfully, my show of restraint (or lack of it) did not end in death, and instead I was rewarded with success for my hard work. While studying, there are many chances to get distracted. Sometimes I’d feel thirsty, so I go downstairs to get a glass of water, then I end up talking to a members of my family, and before I knew it my one minute trip downstairs has turned into thirty. Or I’d check my phone, and that would turn into a fifteen minute ordeal. All of these distractions lead to a great deal of procrastination. During the course of this year, I had to resist the temptations of texting friends, playing outside on a sunny day, or sleeping. These were my Sirens calling out to me as I stood strapped to the mast of my
Odysseus’s journey in many ways can be compared to someone’s life or an allegory. Odysseus and I are similar in some ways also, we both have one big goal that we want to achieve. One of the possible hidden meanings in the story could be not giving up and really wanting to achieve your goals, even with all of the distractions or obstacles that you will face. Odysseus’s goal is to get home to his wife and son home in Ithaca. My goal is to go to college and become a successful businessman or engineer.
Homer’s purpose to this epic story that he put told in “The Odyssey” was to show that even though a journey can be hard you should never forget your goal. I believe homer put Odysseus’ in all those situations deliberately to show how strong you can be even in hard situations. Odysseus’ new his goal was to reach back to his family and he never forgot that and he worked hard everyday to reach back. At the start of the book you see Odysseus’ goal appear when he is trying to get off of Calypso’s island, “Look at my wise Penelope…. Nevertheless I long--- I pine, all my days--- to travel home and see the dawn of my return”(159). Just like the phrase
The island of the Phaeacians is where we see Odysseus’ mood drastically change from an extreme bout of rage to almost desperate, needing help from the rulers of this land. He is primarily in need of clothes, a ship, and food so he can finally start his journey home. This is the most important motivation within the story for explaining how the decisions one may make will affect
The story is constantly using themes and lessons to portray Odysseus’s journey. One example is “hard work pays off”. “Wake up, dear child! Penelope come down, here with your own eyes what all these years you longed for! Odysseus is here!” This is when Odysseus finally returns home after is long, hard journey. When he comes home and Penelope finally sees him, both of them are very happy and exited. Odysseus is finally happy again. This shows that going on the long journey and all of the challenges paid off in the end. The book also teaches good virtues like loyalty. Odysseus shows that loyalty is good to have and can help you conquer challenges. He would not have been able to complete his journey if he had not stayed loyal to his family and the gods (Athena). This motivated him to push through and find his way home. In conclusion, The Odyssey is still important today because it teaches good morals and virtues.
In our lives, we have our big goals, just like Odysseus does. We all work really hard until we reach our goal. Just like how Odysseus goes through a long, difficult journey to return to his wife and son in his homeland Ithaca. We also have our small goals such as winning a soccer game. One of Odysseus's small goals was getting passed the Cyclops. Students can especially see a transition from childhood to adulthood in Telemachus, the son of Odysseus. The epic also shows that we all have our ups and downs. We have our strengths and flaws. Odysseus makes an excellent leader and can think quick on his feet, but sometimes he likes to brag and ends up worsening the situation. Temptation is something that occurs to us a lot. Odysseus was put into temptation several
Which falls into how Odysseus struggled throughout his journey, and how the absence of his family, doubt and curiosity all interferers within his ideology outcome he had in mind to conquer. Yet, he always seems to get through all the difficulties and hardships due to what he knew had to come home to, his family.
Mythology was very huge in Ancient Greece. There are so many different folktales and myths
Throughout Odysseus’ journey he is able to persevere against the overwhelming odds he is faced with. The driving force behind Odysseus’ perseverance is his hunger to get home; his crew however does not share this passion and therefore lacks the strength of character to fight on. Odysseus looks back on his life or death struggle as his ship is lost in Poseidon’s storm, " out of the ship my comrades fell and then like sea-fowl were borne by the side of the black ship along the waves; god cut them off from coming home. I myself paced the ship until the surge tore her ribs off the keel, which the waves then carried along dismantled. The mast broke at the keel; but to it clung the backstay, made of oxhide. With this I bound the two together keel and mast and getting a seat on these, I drifted before the deadly
Greek literature is an assortment of compositions in the Greek dialect, with a constant history reaching out from the first thousand years B.C.E to the present day. From the earliest starting point, journalists were Greeks living in Greece, as well as in Asia Minor, the Aegean Islands, and Magna Graecia (Sicily and southern Italy). After the successes of Alexander the Great, Greek turned into the main language of the eastern Mediterranean and the Byzantine Realm. Writing in Greek was created over a substantially more extensive range as well as by those whose primary language was not Greek. Over a period of over ten centuries, the ancient Greeks made their writing of such brightness that it has infrequently been met and never outperformed. In poetry, tragedy, drama, and history, Greek writers made gems that have roused, and affected readers to today.
