Have you ever seen a house the size of an entire city block? Rome’s and America’s housing are fairly similar in many ways, but also different in many ways. In ancient Rome, the Roman’s houses were built mainly to impress guests. Today in America, our houses are meant to impress guests, but are mainly for people's comfort. Houses in ancient Rome were very grand. There is a difference between wealthy homes in ancient Rome to the average homes found today in America. There is a difference in the types of rooms, the size, and the interior design.

The exterior design of a domus was made out of stone and unburned brick making the houses very durable and resistant to fire and water (“Ancient Roman Housing”). The interior design included a triclinium which was three couches shaped in a U form. The Romans would recline on these couches and be served dinner on their triclinium. In the atrium the design had an open room allowing light, air and water to come in to the house. The water coming in collected in a small pool and was used as drinking water (Fife). There were many decorations in this room such as paintings that represented the Romans power and wealth, and the sculptures were of their ancestors and the gods (“Ancient Roman Housing”). But in the average home found today in America, houses are normally made out of burned brick, not unburned brick. Living rooms normally have televisions connected to DVD players, video games, and stereo systems and contain at least one sofa. Dining rooms normally contain a large table, chairs, and china cabinet. Kitchens normally contain a sink, oven, fridge, garbage can, and a microwave. The decorations in kitchens come from the appliances, walls, counter material, and pictures.
