Have you ever seen a house the size of an entire city block? Rome’s and America’s housing are fairly similar in many ways, but also different in many ways. In ancient Rome, the Roman’s houses were built mainly to impress guests. Today in America, our houses are meant to impress guests, but are mainly for people's comfort. Houses in ancient Rome were very grand. There is a difference between wealthy homes in ancient Rome to the average homes found today in America. There is a difference in the types of rooms, the size, and the interior design.
One difference between wealthy homes in ancient Rome to the average homes found today in America are the kinds of rooms. There were two types of houses in Rome for the wealthy, a domus and a villa. A

The exterior design of a domus was made out of stone and unburned brick making the houses very durable and resistant to fire and water (“Ancient Roman Housing”). The interior design included a triclinium which was three couches shaped in a U form. The Romans would recline on these couches and be served dinner on their triclinium. In the atrium the design had an open room allowing light, air and water to come in to the house. The water coming in collected in a small pool and was used as drinking water (Fife). There were many decorations in this room such as paintings that represented the Romans power and wealth, and the sculptures were of their ancestors and the gods (“Ancient Roman Housing”). But in the average home found today in America, houses are normally made out of burned brick, not unburned brick. Living rooms normally have televisions connected to DVD players, video games, and stereo systems and contain at least one sofa. Dining rooms normally contain a large table, chairs, and china cabinet. Kitchens normally contain a sink, oven, fridge, garbage can, and a microwave. The decorations in kitchens come from the appliances, walls, counter material, and pictures. Bedrooms contain the television, a bed, clock, and drawers (“The Typical American
There was a relaxing feeling coming from the room. The colors were pretty mellow such as the cream-colored walls. Although the room gave off this aura, there was a very elegant tea set in the middle of the room. The wall contained a fireplace while the corner of the room contained a combination of both a bookshelf and a desk. The desk had a pair of golden glasses that belonged to one of the men who lived in the home (I can’t recall exactly who they belonged to). Aside from these things, the room also contained what looked like a very comfortable couch. The guide stated that all of the pieces in the house aside from one fireplace and most of the replicated sales pieces in the General Store.
As I waited for my food, I took note of several things. The walls were covered with sports decoration, televisions, and with
These homes consisted of a central space with a large hearth used for cooking and warmth, had many passageways connecting all the homes, and furniture including cabinets, dressers, and chairs made of stone (3). Each home had a specific feature that made them different from one another including different paintings, materials found such as jewelry and pottery, and some even had burials in them
They both went through a recession. They both had a court system. Wealthy as it was, Rome lived close to the edge; many regions were one dry spell away from famine. America enjoys an economy of abundance, ever surfeit; it must beware the diseases of overindulgence. Rome and America were the most powerful actors in their world, by many orders of magnitude.
When Europeans arrived in North America, they encountered the Native Americans. This encounter was fraught with difficulties for both sides, for the Native Americans more so than the Europeans. Europeans conquered the Native Americans, forced them into labor, and spread diseases which the Native Americans had no resistance to. In addition to this the Europeans considered themselves superior to the Native Americans. Despite this, the Europeans and Native Americans both had things the other wanted and so they frequently engaged in trade with each other. However, the Native Americans thought that, despite not having the luxuries the Europeans had, they were better off than the Europeans. This sentiment is exemplified in “Your People Live Only Upon Cod” by French priest Chrestian LeClerq who was traveling with the Micmac Indians. It is a documented response by an unknown Micmac leader to European, particularly French, claims of superiority. In analyzing this document, we will find that the cultures of the French and the Micmacs were vastly different. We will also discover what the Micmacs and the French thought of each other.
The man who designed the home above was the owner as well, Thomas Jefferson was fascinated with architecture and heavily influenced by the neo-classic era in his endeavors. After the american revolution Thomas Jefferson was appointed to be the American ambassador to France, during his time abroad where he was inspired by the classical buildings and architecture of Europe. When he returned to America Thomas Jefferson brought back ideas that would remodel and bring his home into the mode of the day, Neo-classical. Neo classical architecture is not that much different than classical architecture, because there were not any new architectural innovations. Greek columns and pediments as well as roman arches were used quite liberally. Seen in the
In A Home Is Not a House, Reyner Banham starts by arguing that the main function of the typic American house is to cover its mechanical structure. In fact, he states that the use of mechanical services in architectural practice varies constantly because mechanical services are considered to be new in the profession, as well as, a cultural threat to the architect’s position in the world. To show his argument, Banham states that American houses are basically large single spaces divided by partitions inside that give a relative importance to the use of internal mechanical services, causing a threat to the need of architectural design. Similarly, American cultural characteristics, like cleanliness and hygiene, also foster the use and need of mechanical
Also, the structure of government of the Roman and American republic has some similarities. The basis of both civilizations possessed an overwhelming military strength that may be attributed to the success of each nation. No other country has been dominant culturally, economically, technologically, and militarily in the history of the world since the Roman Empire."(Krauthammer, 2004) The United States of America has the makings of a vast empire, being a leader in all of the aforementioned areas. If you were to take a citizen of the current day United States and put him/her in Ancient Rome, I feel that aside from the obvious cultural differences, that person would notice that day to day life would not be that much different from that of life
Ancient Rome was the golden age of Rome and we are in the golden age of U.S. They have many similarities Ancient Rome already fell but the U.S is on there way, Here is how you can stop the U.S from falling. The modern U.S and Ancient Rome have many differences and similarities. The lessons we learned from Ancient Rome could help the U.S to avoid the collapse that Rome experienced.
For those who could afford their own bathhouse, which was extremely rare and mostly seen amongst people of power, bathing was a much more lonely endeavor. As for the majority of the ancient Roman population, they went with family, friends, and colleges the public gathering place what was the baths. Attending a Roman bath was a day-to-day ritual that allowed for relaxation and healthy conversation which one’s loved ones as they exercised in the atrium. Although the Romans didn’t know it at the time, exercise is incredibly healthy for not only one’s physical health, but mental as well. By visiting the baths and bathing on the basis that the Romans did, they proved to be much healthier people. At first the roman baths were gender separated, but co-ed bathing became more common during 100 AD. Understanding the social ranking in ancient Roman times, it made more sense to the builders to have the baths gender separated anyways; the women would talk about raising the children, kitchen recipes, and neighborhood gossip while the men would rank about work and their views on
Theater Roman theatres derive from and are part of the overall evolution of earlier Greek theatres. Indeed, much of the architectural influence on the Romans came from the Greeks, and theatre structural design was no different from other buildings. However, Roman theatres have specific differences, such as generally being built upon their own foundations instead of earthen works or a hillside and being completely enclosed on all sides. I recently went to Legally Blonde: The Musical at Northview High School on March 25th. Many of my friends starred in the show, and I was excited to see and support them! They all did so good, and I was very proud of them!
There are many differences between Ancient Rome and the U.S. One difference between Ancient Rome and the U.S. One difference was Ancient Rome’s government. In Ancient Rome their government was a republic then it turned into a pure monarchy/dictatorship. In this government the eldest child of the current emperor is the heir to the throne. Another difference would be how Ancient Rome made their money. Ancient Rome conquered other countries and took their wealth. The U.S. made their own money at a printing press. One more difference between Ancient Rome and the U.S. would be they both have different types of currency. Ancient Rome used gold coins for their currency and the U.S. uses a paper currency.
Romans became more and more concerned with constructing interior space rather than filling it with structural supports. As a consequence, the inside of Roman buildings were as extraordinary as their exteriors.
