Most gothic literature novels show several similarities in their writing compared to one another. In the novel And Then There Were None and short story ¨The Rats in the Walls¨ the authors develop a gothic theme by expressing dark and mysterious tones. Christie and Lovecraft’s stories both have several similarities and differences. In And Then There Were None, Christie shows how abandoned houses that are isolated from surrounding places and people usually hold a mysterious history and stories. Although several years separate these writings in literature, both explore how ancient houses typically lead to secrets and mysteries.
In the novel And Then There Were None, Christie illustrates a remote and abandoned island which has a large, old mansion located on it. The author causes the reader to form a dark view over the house. She gives certain elements to the story which causes suspicion to form. In addition, Lovecraft, the author of the short story ¨The Rats in the Walls,¨ illustrates an old house that was built many years ago that was also abandoned by most of it’s owners. Lovecraft also forms suspicion by hinting around about the history of the old mansion and a suggestion that there is something hiding within the mansion. …show more content…

Although ¨The Rats in the Walls¨ has no hint of a supernatural element, the novel And Then There Were None does indeed have a hint of the supernatural. In the novel, the author hints that maybe the killings are caused by a supernatural element hidden within the mansion. Although there was no actual supernatural elements in the story there was still a mention that it could be a possibility but it was later ruled out of the equation. In the short story, Lovecraft does not mention any chance of supernatural around the mansion. He rules out the suspicious behavior as a person or certain animal that is terrorizing the people living in the
