‘Boulle’, a form of marquetry, was historically an Italian process that came to prominence when it was ‘perfected’ by the French artist Andre-Charles Boulle (1642-1732). Boulle’s mastery of the craft ultimately caused the technique to be named for him. Boulle was a member of the ébénistes (the ‘royal cabinetmakers’), who were responsible for veneered and marquetried case furniture, cabinets and commodes (one of the popular new types of furniture introduced during the eighteenth century. Andre Charles would go on to produce the first pair of commodes in the Boulle style for the bedchamber of Louis XIV at the Grand Trianon.
